Shooting Windsurfing/kite Surfing

Hello everyone!

Was wondering if anyone has any experience/tips/recommendations regarding shooting action on the beach (windsurfing/kite surfing/surfing etc)...I hope to get engaged in this kind of shooting this coming summer and need all the advice I can get!

Things which immediately spring to mind are:
1) Short lens on the DVX: will the 1.6 tele converter from Century Optics do the trick? how does this unit behave optically? How many stops does it take out of exposure? What thread does it have?( I already have a 72mm polariser)

2) Will the Mattlebox work with this converter? Any other good value Mattebox worth considering for this?

3) What kind of protection will I need for the DVX? I will be shooting from the beach and possibly off a rubber dinghy (20 footer/ 6 Metre)

Any other important things I may be overlooking?? Worth shooting 25p? (PAL land here...) Or best to stick to 50i and de-interlace in post - using Vegas (in case it wasn't obvious!)

Many thanks in advance for any pointers you may like to share with me!

oh...and Barry, I've you read this, thanks for the wonderful work on the book! (and the sig ;D ) Ordered last Monday; here on Saturday!

All the best!

Re: Shooting Windsurfing/kite Surfing

hey.. I would say if you can swing it get a water housing.. it lets you get in the water alot closer and get shots you would be to scared to otherwise and you dont need to worry about the sand and water doing damage. Price is just a bit more than a tele.

If you do get a tele then the century is a good choice.. dont worry about stop loss because odds are you are shooting in the sun and a stop down is probally an asset vs. liability.

Hey Jarred,

thanks for the idea...I had thought about that option...but the idea of floating around a dozen windsurfers/kiters holding onto a dvx is kind of frightening...I think I care too much for my DVX!! I have decided to use my small jvc mini dv for the in-water stuff...won't be as painful if something goes horribly wrong! (and the housing will be much cheaper!)

Ok, I think I'll go for the centruy tele converter...Do you happen to know if the Matteblox will work with it on? Need to think of a protective casing too...anyone any experience with something along the lins of Ewa-Marine stuff??

Hola PDB !

I think that the unique matte box that work (whit this tele converter) is the Chrosziel whit rods.

there is a Petroff matte box and i believe that work whit teleconverters... I think, but the Chrosziel is the best choice.

and over the another question... I will shoot in 25P mode and when I don´t have enough light, I shoot in 1/25 shutter, this give me more f stops whit a smooth blur. Desinterlace in Vegas not is the same, it looks more video

Forget it for shooting in the dinghy without a water housing. It will work only if it is calm water, I doubt it if you shooting windsurfing or kiting.

You will definitly need the 1.6 converter to get closer look.

Rather than post a new topic I thought what I need to ask is pretty relevant to this thread:

Like PDB, I am looking to find decent protective casing for the dvx-100. I am filming snowboarding and am anxious that the camera be well protected. I'm thinking that fully waterproof casing might be the wisest option but does this provide any impact protection at all? I certainly don#t plan on throwing the camera around but if it was dropped at all I'd like to minimise the risk of such an occurance being fatal to my lovely dvx-100.

Anyway, another point I have is WHERE can I see a comprehensive list of accessories for this camera? I can't even seem to locate anywhere in the UK/Ireland that sells anything other than the basic extras like batteries and so on.

Many thanks in advance for those kind enough to point me in the right direction...
