Shooting Weddings & Music Videos

Anyone know of any good links or resources about shooting weddings and music videos. Things like what kind of lighting is neccessary and where to place it.

Wanted to get some ins and outs of shooting weddings and such. Is it very difficult to start doing this kind of work. I have a friend that does photo shoots almost every weekend for weddings, and I'm sure I could get some video gigs that way. I really want to make shorts and eventually features, but making extra money this way would be helpful. Just wanted some opinions. Thanks.

I'm not enough of a people person to be able to handle doing weddings. One foul syllable from an unstable Bridezilla or her bodyguard-esque planner and I would be having to pay them back their fee plus medical expenses. :) My hat's off to anyone who can deal with people on that level. :)

The problem with WEVA is that they are a For-Profit organization, which means they won't teach you anything unless you pony up some cash. And even then, what they teach you may or may not even be relevant to your needs. On top of that, they seem to be somewhat disorganized which may or may not be because they are currently working through legal battles.

Videouniversity, on the other hand, is absolutley free. Like this forum, it is a high traffic, high volume open area for discussion on any wedding & event related topics. If pursuing wedding videography is your goal, then there is no other greater resource on the internet for learning.

Agreed ProjX. Weva pisses a lot of people off. I've never been a member but check on the forum at video university and see for yourself.

Thanks for the insight, everytime I've been to the WEVA website, my "cheese meter" pegs out... now I know.

proj- is this your assumption or your experience?

my own experience was that it was invaluable to starting my business. I paid for membership and the shared knowledge from the boards and members saved me unmeasurable amounts of time, money, sweat, and heartache. that is all I have to say. you are certainly entitled to your own opinion or educated guess.

I googled this and haven't found any decent articles or resources about shooting weddings. I didn't find anything about what kind of lighting to use.

I'll be going thru videouniversity forums maybe I'll find something there about lighting, positions etc.

Pros only use on-camera lights (sometimes) at the reception. I did hear a story once of a videographer that set up some bright lights bounced off the celing of the dance floor, but I don't think they ever got a second job. You should buy one of the many "Guides to Wedding Videography" that are out there. And you get what you pay for in this area, so don;t go too cheap.

My guess is that you have not been to the VideoUniversity forums.

Consider yourself one of the fortunate ones that actually got something out of their membership dues.

The point I was trying to make is that WEVA isn't the only game in town when trying to learn wedding videography, even though they try to make it seem like they are.

The forums at VU have more traffic, posts, information and resources for learning then WEVA does. Unlike WEVA, it is not limited to the ideologies and philosophies of its select membership. No hidden agendas. In fact, many members of other wedding video organizations post on VU regularly, including members from WEVA. And to boot, VU is absolutely FREE.

WEVA is strictly financially driven. Videouniversity is knowledge driven.
