I'm shooting a film and a scene is set in the 1970's and I really want it to have that quality you see in old 70's photos. Has anyone tried to do this or know how to achieve this look?
I will be shooting on the DVX100A in progressive and editing in FCP4.5
Have a look at Magic Bullet Editors. I shoot my video so that it looks good, as 24p footage, with good lighting and audio. Then, when I'm editing, I use the pluggins like Magic Bullet to change the look of the video. It's a safer bet then playing with the setup in-camera, which you'll be stuck with.
you could also try boosting up the Saturation in the footage and maybe adding some grain to it...and make the contrast a little bit higher and it should be somewhat close to the look your going for...go to secondary color corrector and boost up the saturation and then brightness and contrast...and just make the contrast higher...not the brightness...should work...
Looking at my Kodachrome-era photo album, the greens and reds seem to oversaturate significantly while blues (like the sky) tended to render more grayish.
On 110 cameras, the flashcube was quite primitive as well, so you might add a subtle bypass in MB to simulate this overexposure. Like blackhawk said, you can crush the latitude through contrast, but don't crush those hot highlights too much!
I did an experiment where I used the color correcter in Final Cut and made the reds heavier, and added a blur and upped the contrast. You have to just play around with it, but it made it look like old super 8 "Wonder Years" type. Go to my website, under "Projects" and click on "What Happened?" The last minute or so (whole short is about 5 min.) is the old looking footage. See if that is what you're looking for.
