Shooting Sunrise

I will be shooting sunrise tomorrow morning with my completely "stock" dvx100a.
Should I take any precautions?

Any tips?

Thank you!

Watch your exposure levels; I'd start Wide Open and adjust accordingly; paying close attention to the changing light conditions. Expose for just to the left or right of the sun and NOT the sun itself.

Are you shooting time lapse or normal?

Be aware of what you are shooting, and plan accordingly. If you are shooting people make sure to bring some lighting or at least reflectors in order to adequatly light your subject with losing your sky in the background.

So, is it safe to shoot sunset/sunrise? I always thought we couldn't even point the camera at the sun, let alone leave it there long enough to shoot something? Is there a way of doing it without burning out the CCDs?

Tube talk

What you are refering to is a very old rule. Before CCD's cameras used tubes to reproduce color. Yes, those were very sensitve to bright light and if exposed to a bright source for a period of time a burn mark would appear on the tubes.

It is still not a good idea to leave a lens, or viewfinder, exposed to a bright light (say a 1000 watt key) for a long period of time.

In short, you'll be fine shooting the sunset.

Hey Last Minute

That's really good to know - thanks for your advice! I've avoided doing it so far, but I know at some time that I will want to shoot a sunset or sunrise, and it's good to know the camera has the capability, and that I'm not risking any damage.

What would I do without DVXuser.com?!
