Shooting Music Vids

this feels like a n00b question, but helpful for me...
How's a music vid shot?
Synching with the track?
Setups?
Do you shoot the whole song through in each of the setups?
I've seen 16mm video sets where a director will know that he only wants a certain setup for a certain portion of the song, so he doesn't even bother with more than he wants (too frugal for me)
Also, a total gumshoe gave me the greatest idea: He asked me if I piped the track into the camera during the shoot...
til now, I've only had a loudspeaker reference for the talent which gets recorded by the int. mic...
So what's the gospel, people?

First draw up a treatment for the video. Then decide what parts of the song you want to shoot where...You may want the chorus of the song to be out in the street somewhere but then decide to shoot the 2nd verse in a studio or whatever. If your the Director, u get to make those decisions. As for the on set music. That is just for playback for the artist. When you edit the actual video you will be using the mastered song. You may have one setup that is only going to be a close up. Another set up may consists of only cut aways. So just plan your shots and scout your locations in advance.

Yes, music on the set is only as a reference guide. I did a music video for a starving artist with only 4 locations. I used a CD boom box to play the track. The artist lip sync the song. I used a Glidecam 4000 pro and shot in 24P. The only draw back was that the focusing was in manual and I had to stay within the parameter before it got out of focus. Okay on the editing part. I use FCP 4 and what I did was kind of old school. I imported the track off the CD, put it on the timeline. Imported the video as a whole for each location (edit: I shot once with the artist doing the entire song, then I shot bits and pieces, with close-ups, medium shots and wide shots and repeating this process at each location) played it along with the audio track, used markers to mark what I would like to put in then used the razor tool to cut and just dropped it in the timeline. This process was slow but I managed to produce a professional quality music video.

Re: Shooting Music Vids

sweet...that's what I wound up doing, but as you said it takes so long, I was wondering if there's "a way" that I've just overlooked...
What do people think about recording your own reference into the cam? This sounds like gold to me because for one of the setups, I couldn't hear the boombox on the tape, so synching was tough.
I think we all agree that a high quality mastered audio track would be used under it all in post...
ALSO, (my favorite word) some shots look like they need some roomtone or some ambience or something...even I'm not buying the canned sound of the track to the video.
