Shooting music videos

I've only ever done narrative work. I'm about to start doing some music videos. My question is, how is it done? Does the artist lip sync to their song during the performances pieces? Do you record the audio coming from whatever they are lip syncing to? What method is used to make sure the performance pieces are in sync with the recorded song?

From what I've read, and the few TV studio 'live' show presentations that I've attended, 'lipsync/bodysync' is the standard. Friends who have shot 'live band' performances, thinking they could put the 'clean' studio work in post, found that bands are notoriously 'bad' at 1) timing, 2) variations.

By putting a boombox up with the band's studio, perhaps even with a metronome blinker, you may be able to get their visual motions to match up with the prerecorded music.

I've only done two music videos, so I'm not very experienced, but this is what I did:

- When filming, play the original song on some speakers and have the artist lip sync to it.
- It's okay to have the artist sing a long with the original song, just make sure the artist is perfectly in sync with audio track that's being played.
- Make sure the song is being played loud enough so that you can hear it when you playback what you've filmed.

During the editing process, take the original song and put it on the time line. Then take the footage you've filmed and use the audio from that footage to sync it up with the original song until it matches perfectly. Once the audio from your footage matches with the original song, you can delete the audio from the footage you've filmed. Not sure if that makes sense, but I can try to clarify any parts that you didn't understand.
