Any hints, tips, suggestions? I am shooting some beauty shots of rings, necklaces etc. The client is coming to shoot some tests this week. I'm not as concerned about my lighting as I am about propping, staging the jewelry.
Will you be in a jewelry store? If not, I'd get some black velvet or duvateen material. Put whatever you want underneath it (even ring boxes so your rings can stand up). Drape another piece of black material behind it and you're good to go.

You also will want white tent style lighting, with a rear positioned, forward (toward lens) specular kicker light. Jewelry people love to see there stuff in glittering detail. Certain items of jewelry can act as fun house mirrors and show all the defects in the studio, distorted. Use white cards to clear up any such anomalies.
