Shooting/interviewing at a convention -best setup?

I'll be at E3 in LA this year conducting several interviews with people. The convention is loud and noisy. Would it be best to use a boom mic? shot gun mic? or a wireless mic on the person being interviewed? or which combination should work best? Any recomendations on a good mic for this?

thanks!

Are these walk and talk interviews or sit down interviews? It sounds like your best bet is to use an Electrovoice RE50 hand held mic with a plug on tx. It's a dynamic mic, so you won't get all the hub-bub of the convention getting into your sound.

well, it might be a mixture of both stand up and sit down, but this has the goal of becoming a documentary, and a big bulky mic isn't something i often see in docs.

But it'll work well. I just shot the Shot Show, doing similar type interviews (but with an on-camera interviewer) and we used a dynamic mic with a plug-in wireless transmitter. It worked reasonably well.

i'd probably go with a lav.

is it a two shot where the question asker will be standing side by side with the interviewee?

in that case have the questioner use a handheld and the interviewee a lav.

plus you can put a snazzy mic flag on the handheld with the logo for the documentary!

heh, also, on a previous thread i was told i'd need to drop $2000+ on audio equipment for proper sound, how acurate is this? and what will i need?

All depends on the kind of lavaliere you're using. If you're using an omnidirectional, you'll probably be swamped with background noise. You'd have to use something like a highly directional hypercardioid lav, and with something like that, placement is *crucial* to getting acceptable quality sound. And, you'll have to make sure the interviewee doesn't turn their head much, etc.

How tight are these shots? If it's a "60 Minutes" type of interview, a reasonably tight head shot, you can still use the dynamic mic, just out of frame. It'll probably work fine. Otherwise, you could get a talented boom operator to follow you around and get an overhead mic right on 'em... heck, have 'em hang the dynamic mic from the boompole, that'd work...
