shooting indoors in club

Here's my scenario: Last time I was shooting my friends' band at Long Beach Arena with my unprofessional Canon ZR20. I was on the side of the stage, then roaming down in front, then even got some killer shots up on the second level pointing down. Now I have a new DVX and am learning about how to set up my shots and getting the proper settings. My question is, what is the best way to set the camera for that kind of shooting? Basically the white balance and iris. I need recommendations on a good middle ground, because I'm running around so much. I read a post by Prariedog and he said white balance set at 3200 and to use manual iris. I do not doubt what he is saying, I just wanted some others to add to it. I will be doing alot of shooting like this.
Thanks, Steve

3200 is a good place to start. I would white balance off a sheet of papper that you get some one to hold on stage. Then I would try to keep my iris as open as I could but not over expose the shot. just enough. Try to stay away from using to much gain as it will make it granie. And just play around if you have done this befor it wont be a big prob for you

IMG, when you use manual iris, does that mean you just use the adjustment dial and put it to where you think it's best? You kinda get to know it?

Yes. I try to keep it open becuz most times when bands are playing the lights are moving and flashing and that sort of thing. So I keep it open so I don't lose any of that light that might be comming into my camera. But I'm not affarid to bring it down a couple of stops to get the image I want. So yeah just play with it. You can tell when an image looks good and rich and not. So trust your eyes. But remeber you can always make it darket in post but it is really hard to lighten up a shot and make it look good.
