Shooting in sqeeze mode....Why so bad?

In squeeze you loose 33% of vertical native resolution, camera converts the vertical pixels to dv standard.

In 4:3 or letterbox converted to 16:9 in post you loose the same 33% to black masks, but some say editors make the conversion better, who knows? By shooting 4:3 you can reframe, but you should frame the shots while shooting, yes?

I just shoot squeeze to make things simple.

By using anamorphic you use the full resolution of the sensor, but get other problems, like no zoom thru and focus problems. It is really just something we use while waiting for the HD to mature.

On that set up Dan I'd have to agree the squeeze looks better. But if you use instandHD for the increase in size from 4:3 cropped to full widescreen I have always found the overall result much better. I also think the FCP algorithm does a better job than this.

Ok, someone please explain to me like I'm a child how exactly you can get resolution that's not there?

I mean, you have 720x480 pixels of resoultion on a DVX100 right (and most other SD cameras).

So, if you chose to letter box, it just puts black bars over the pixels you don't want.

How exactly can Squeeze get you to keep that resolution? I mean, I suppose you could "squeeze" it into a 16x9 image but wouldn't that result in it looking distorted and warped and when you unsqueeze wouldn't what you gained in vertical resolution be lost in horizontal resolution?

squeeze mode will not keep any resolution that 4x3 with bars throws away. They are two different ways of ending up at the same place, with the same resolution. It's just some people think that one way does it better.

Shooting with the anamorphic adaptor will keep all the resolution the DVX can offer, but that is a different beast entirely.

Squeeze mode, in laymans terms, digitally stretches the pixels, making the effective resolution 720X360. It allows you to edit in a native 16:9 timeline. Unless you are outputting anamorphic 16:9, you are better off to shoot in letterbox which to me always seemed a little less noisy for some reason...

Correct me if im wrong, but in squeeze, dont you lose resolution all over, but when you crop the 4:3, you only lose the top and bottom, but all the original resolution is there.

I recently directed a short in which I put some tape on the LCD and the monitor to mark where the black bars would be if I turned them on.
Then I shot the whole thing in 4:3.
After that I edited the film on the avid and added the bars on that program.
I also made a widescreen version of the short by using the 16:9 function on the avid.
The best part is that this method allows for artificial tilts and corrections in the editing process. It also allows for fixing errors that may have occurred such as a slightly visible boom mike that went unnoticed because you are adding the black bars.
It is a hassle to mess with the gaffer tape at first but the result is well worth it (for me).

If you keep it as a cropped 4:3 file, then you're right. If you crop and then resize to 16:9, then you lose the resolution.

Huh. Oh well, good to know- thanks.

But yea, when you shoot in 4:3, and accidentally got bad headroom, or put the action too low in the frame, you can also crop the part of the video you need into the 16:9 frame, covering the unneeded with the black bars.

Hi guys,

I did some testing today, with squeeze compared to instand HD uprez. Well squeeze is a bit softer but has less dvcodec artifacts, less noise, cleaner image! So i guess squeeze is better, because with instand hd or photozoom your uprezzing a image that has more dvcodec artifacts!

I'm just wondering. I know people say it's better to shoot in a 4:3 frame and crop in post later since if you shoot in squeeze mode your losing 1/3 of your resolution. I agree and understand with the losing resolution, since your not using about 33% of your shot.. BUT since your cropping in post anyway your STILL not gonna use that video information anyway. So what's teh big deal with using squeeze mode?
Hey,

I plan to shoot in "Letterbox" mode on my DVX100.

Hey,

My questions is there any difference between 'Squeeze mode
and 'Letterbox mode'?
