Shooting in Russia

Hey guys,

I'm moving to Russia from the USA next year to teach English in either Moscow or St. Petersburg, and I plan to shoot some short scripts i've written while I'm there...

Am I going to be able to take a video camera bought in the US and my editing suite (Premiere Pro 2.0, PC) over there or would I be better off buying a computer and camera there?

I'm hoping some Cinematographers that have shot in other countries will know the answers.

Shooting in Russia

Hello - I don't have the answers you are looking for, but I am about to go to Ukraine and Russia to do some shooting and I am wondering if you had any advice at all to give me. I will be shooting in Moscow and Siberia while in Russia and In Kiev while in the Ukraine.

Now that you've been in Russia for a while can you share soe of your experiences?

Thanks

buying there will be much more expensive. keep in mind that russia runs on PAL so if you wanna show there, you'll have to convert.
also it's 220 volts on the mains so if you bring equipment, get some 220 - 110volt adapters or buy different adapters for 220 that will fit your camera/equipment.

Im from Alabama and i've lived in Moscow for about 6 months now studying. I've shot several documentary, narrative and live performance stuff here. I'm shooting on the DVX100(the original).

I shoot everything NTSC because most of my footage is either distributed online or stateside only. Plus, anything newer than ancient in PAL countries will play NTSC just fine anyway. although mixing PAL and NTSC on one timeline might be a problem--but, I don't have any experience with that.

and Yes. you should bring all of your special/expensive equipment with you. make sure you bring a good american surge protector so you can use it to plug all of your american gear into then just use one plug adaptor. and buy your plug adaptors over here(they're much cheaper). make sure all of your equipment has transformers built into them(110v-240v compatible), otherwise you'll need to have those transformer/plug adaptor combo thingies.

hope that helps a little...Btw, I love it here in Russia! I'm sure you'll have a blast! But be careful shooting around military stuff. I was arrested and interrogated by the ФСБ a couple of weeks ago for shooting a skyline of the city--haha , ittle did I know i was standing a block away from a special-forces training ground. oops...

I was able to use my laptop for editing in Egypt and a simple converter worked fine for my gear. But I also found several people very interested in the "gear" I was using, I would suggest that you don't broadcast the fact that you have some expensive gear hanging out at home. And like Holymesicobatman said, a surge protecter is key, and convenient.
