Shooting in other than 24p

As I have not yet received Vegas, nor, Barry's book yet, I have a question about getting the film look, without using 24p.

The software is shipping with Magic Bullet. If my end goal is to have a film look, and be able to go to film out if the project calls for it, is it possible or practical to shoot in say 30, and then run it through Magic Bullet or some other process? Obviously, with 30, I get back autofocus, auto everything, and it sounds like a nice trade off, but then again common sense tells me that if that were true, then no one would be shooting in 24 to get the film look.

Is there something I have missed here that has to do with the editing process, or possibly some other drawback? I called FilmLook, and it would be exhorbitantly expensive, but they can get results with just about any format, so that is not a practical option. Sorry for asking this question prematurely, but my curiosity is eating at my brain and I can't sleep.

It is almost impossible to get a quality conversion from 30p to 24p for a film out. I don't know the technical reasons behind it, but I just know that it doesn't work. That's one of the reasons why most people shoot 24p instead of 30p.

Also, other than the knee (for blowouts), I don't know of any other "auto" features that aren't working when you're shooting in 24PA ... they may take a little longer to adjust (focus, etc.), but that's all I've experienced.

Bottom line, if you're TRULY going for the film look, you don't want auto anything. You're going to have to commit some time to set up for light, exposure, focus, angle, etc. You want MAX Depth of Field, which will be nearly impossible to get with everything on "auto". If you've ever been on a film shoot, it's a TON of set up (sometimes an hour or much more) for a brief amount of filming ... but the shot looks GREAT.

24P in and of its self does not make video look like film.
