hey, i'm shooting in a bar next weekend. the way the bar is lit now looks great to my eye. its just a little too dark for my dvx. is there an easy way to just brighten everything up a little bit so the camera can grab it but without changing too much?

Turn up bar lights.
Slower shutter speed.
more gain
FIreworks (inside be careful, think RHode Island...)

I once worked in a nightclub, and the best time of the night was closing up, you'd go and turn on all the flourescent lights to get everyone out.

That's when they got a look at who they spent the night slobbering over.

Good times.....

Don't turn up the lights, use small diffused fills.

i've heard about people using chinese lanterns. do you think they would be appropriate for this situation?

Yes, but put some duvateen over the top (leaving room to vent) and sides to control the spill. Try them on a dimmer too.
