Shooting in 24p or 24p Advanced

For a feature that is intended to be entered into festivals, is it best to film in 24p or 24p Advanced? Then, should it be rendered in 23.97 or 29.96?

Thanks.

Jeff

Depends on how you plan to edit it. If editing on a 60i timeline, shoot 24P and render to 29.97.

If editing on a 24P timeline, shoot 24PA and render to 23.976.

Barry, what if you want your end product to be on DVD at 29.96 with the option of transferring to film at 23.97? Would you shoot at 24pa, capture with a 2:3:3:2 pull-down to edit at 24 fps, then render to 23.976? If so, when you author to DVD, will every fourth frame be repeated as a progressive frame or will there be some kind of interlaced frame inserted? A clear, progressive frame repeated 6 times every second would imitate the look of a telecine transfer from film to video. I have been faithfully shooting at 24pa even when outputting to video for television assuming that every fourth frame is duplicated this way. Am I correct?

If you're making a DVD, shoot 24PA, encode a 23.976fps progressive DVD, and you'll be good to go. It'll automatically add a pulldown on regular DVD players for NTSC televisions, and on a computer screen or progressive set you can see the 24P native frame rate.
