Shooting Hi Def or Widescreen

When your shooting with say a HVX200 or a high dollar camera like the Sony F900 or the like do you have to change how you frame your shots? I just switched my Betacam SX at work over to shoot 16:9 format but since everybody doesn't have HDTV's or programming yet, my viewfinder is set to 16:9 widescreen with a 4:3 marker box. I have to frame everything within that 4:3 box. I guess on a HDTV it will even out and look fine but in terms of lower 3rds and graphics it could cause problems.

Most that shots with the HVX wants 16:9 so they dont frame for 4:3.

So my advise is to shoot and edit 16:9 and then when everything is done make the panscan to 4:3.

Are you saying that the Betacam SX in 16:9 will not, when output to DVD or tape "fit" a standard 4:3 tv? It wont letterbox and compress the frame? Correct me if i'm wrong but isn't the SX an SD cam?

Note: Try to also give your subject matter plenty of room from all the sides so they won't look like they are off the screen. Use your safe area template if you have one. At work they try to give it as much as and an two inches from the sides so the people don't seem like they are far from each other especially after the 16:9 HD blowup is rendered. On 4:3 it doesn't really matter much.

I just shoot and edit in native 16:9 (which is what all HD cameras shoot in), then make an widescreen DVD that will be in wide screen on HDTVs and add letterbox bars on regular TVs.
