Shooting handheld with hvx and Letus Extreme

I've looked into this very much but I get confused with all of the details and English is not best either.

I would like to know:
Can I buy a letus extreme and comfortably use it with my hvx without buying a big support rig like the ones from zacuto?

They are very nice but I shoot most of my stuff run and gun..I am the sole cam op...shoots last for several hours at a time...and in small, real and often public locations

and almost always, there is no tripod work.

Is this a possibility?

All responses greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

you can always do hand held if you have the biceps... But according to comfortability, I would absolutely recommend a working shouldersupport.

There are many cheaper support rigs than Zacuto, so have a look on Cavision for example.

Always remember: YOU live to shoot. Not to BUY things.

That rig will be about 6kg heavy. So Id say for 7 hours you gotta be pretty strong to do it. Id even dare to say no you shouldnt do it.

You wont have auto focus so you have to keep the other hand free to operate the lens thats pretty far out in front of you. And unless you get some sort of shoulder support that means the whole weight is on one hand.

If you do get a shoulder support you really need an external monitor to go with it. Because when you move the cam back far enough to put the weight of the rig on your shoulder you wont be able to look into the LCD or the EVF anymore.

I do stuff with this kinda rig without shoulder support all the time but I shoot music videos and stuff that requires max one minute hand held shots. Thats all I can handle comfortably without shoulder support.

If you're shooting run and gun stuff, getting quality footage using a 35mm adapter and getting shallow depth of field (which is one of the primary reasons you use the adapter in the first place) are going to be difficult.

Unless you have three hands, how are you going to hold the camera rig and pull focus at the same time?

Doesn't seem too practical to me.

Of course, if you're striving for deeper DOF, it might not matter as much, depending on whether you're using a specific lens to achieve a particular effect (e.g., long lens, narrow FOV).
