Shooting for Vertical - 5D Mk II -> iPad?

Hi everyone - long time... I have a question - I'm shooting on the 5D MK II at full HD, 24p (though I'm not sure how relevant that is) - it's a story for an ipad-only magazine and the format is vertical pages. so the video will be shown as long-ways up on the ipad. My question is this: I was planning on shooting normally and taping the monitor to be a vertical sliver in the middle of the normal horizontal image, and then just cropping in post - that way I would have the footage for my reel to show full frame as a horizontal. I assume the resolution will be sufficient (basically using 1/3 of the image area to be shown vertically on an ipad) yes? Is there any reason to actually shoot it vertically, I mean turn the camera to vertical and shoot video? (Thus using the whole sensor?) Aside from obvious advantage of maximizing focal length...? Any thoughts appreciated! I assume the low resolution of the ipad could be more than compensated for by using 1/3 of the 5D sensor, but maybe I'm missing something...?

The new iPad has a high resolution than the 5D. I shoot vertical stuff and always flip the camera to use the full resolution. It seems to help me frame as well, but then I've never taped a monitor.

So your video would be about 800x1080 pixels.... which is pretty low. The iPad2 is 768x1024, and iPad3 is 1536x2048.

So on one hand, if you want it to look stunning on an iPad3, then you clearly need all the pixels you can get. Of course you also need to consider how the content will be delivered -- if over cellular, then you may want to limit the resolution, in order to keep the bitrate down. This will also depend on the lengths of the segments, are they intended to be streamed live, etc.

In any case I would definitely shoot vertical -- keep as much resolution as possible, and you can always scale down.
