Shooting first music video

Hey guys!

I’m brand new to this forum and I thought I would ask my first question concerning lighting. I am shooting my first music video for a good friend of mine in a couple of weeks and its going to be shot in the recording studio with mostly performance shots on the mic mixed with some interaction b-rolls , etc. I am taking on my first video and I dont know the first thing about lighting and I have no one else to reach out to locally (small town) so I thought I maybe I could get some suggestions and helpful tips going into this shoot. I saw this video by a group called the Deans List and I liked the way they shot the video. What kind of lighting will I need to set up to create a similar look and I’m especially wondering how I need to set up my lighting to create the look in the dark room against the white wall (attaching a photo for reference). Thanks everyone!

First of all, welcome to the forum!

As for that screenshot, and i'm no expert, it seems that they used a very harsh light with barn doors to direct the light coming down from the top left. I don't see any fill .

Looks like a single open face lamp? Atleast in the studio. Maybe another one from the other side, but could also be the wall bouncing.
Agree with Henderson on the screenshot

Looks more like a fresnel to me. Open face fixtures usually cause double shadows since they creates two sources - the actual filament and the reflector surrounding it. Fresnels won't do this since they have a spherical reflectors that bounce the light right back through the filament.

Interesting! What type of fresnel light would you reccomend for me? (about $250-300 range)

I would say just look on eBay for some of the reputable manufacturers, you'll find something. Arri tends to be ridiculously expensive, but there's also Altman, DeSisti, Mole, LTM, etc. Then you have some lesser known brands that are just as high quality like Strand, Colortran, and B&M. The highest wattage you can use on household power is a 2k, the smallest light you can obtain is probably a 200w unit (which can be lamped down to 50w). For the sole purpose of obtaining the look of that screengrab, the wattage you should get depends on the sensitivity of your camera.

Also, if you want something cheaper, you could get a theatrical fresnel and get a TVMP adapter and a set of barn doors that fits. These aren't built quite as strongly as location oriented fixtures though.
