Shooting dirt track racing, camera protection

A last minute job came up and I don't have time to get a rain jacket for my camera. I'll be shooting cars racing on a dirt track. I worked with a guy who shot the races last week with his xl1 and it was covered with dust after the shoot. Any ideas how I can protect my camera?

Rig up a trash bag REALLY well with gaffers tape.

Re: Shooting dirt track racing, camera protection

You can buy a clear rain poncho (clear so you can see the lcd/etc.). Place the camera inside with the lens pointing out the hood opening. Use tape to seal the hood around the front of the camera. Make sure you are using a UV filter or similar. If you are using a tripod, extend it through the bottom of the poncho and tape the poncho tight around the post. Otherwise, seal up the bottom of the poncho by tying it off.

Insert your arms through the sleeves to access the camera. Use rubber bands to seal the sleeves tight around your arms.

There you go. Good luck.

I recommend the "contractor grade" trash bags found at any Home Depot type super store. They are made for nails and studs and stuff that will destroy any normal trash bag. You will feel more secure about the safety of your camera with these. Once you try em you'll never leave home without em. You can start new with a clean dry one as often as you like.

would you need to add anything "moisture absorbent" inside the trash bag shell to avoid condensation/humidity?

i'm eyeing the new porta brace rain coat but don't know how often i would use it.

there's gonna be condensation in anything except an underwater housing @$1300 but these will keep the moisture out. familiarize yourself with the condensation warning feature on the DVX. the contractor-grade trash bags are huge and heavy duty, thick black plastic. they will protect the entire rig 2/3 of the way down the legs. you could climb inside but would need a snorkel ;) most importantly, once one is dirty or wet you just discard it and start with a clean, dry one. also, they don't get all static-y

Re: Shooting dirt track racing, camera protection

one small tip to go with that, be careful of the phrase "contractor" trash bags.

that is what i always get at the office and i sent one of my employees to pickup some stuff at the store and she got "contractor trash bags" and they were a very lame immitation that was nothing like what i had always gotten before.

they were so thin you could easily see light through them.

Yea, you gotta get em at Home Depot. Supermarkets and such don't have em. Sounds like a fun shoot.

To absorb excess moisture you could also secure a couple of silica gel packs in your bag somehow. They can absorb up to 40% or so of their weight in moisture.
