Shooting day for night

I went through ALL the messages on the boards and found some tips on shooting day for night, but I didn't find many grabs or clips of how good or bad the footage can actually look. If anyone could post some I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance guys.

*Forgot to mention that I'm really only interested in day for night exteriors.

p.s.- Here are the tips that I found if anyone else needs to shoot DFN and is too lazy to search for it:

1. Underexpose by at least a stop and a half or so
2. Color Correct in Post although you can WB to achieve a similar look
4. Shoot at Dawn or Dusk
5. Try not and show the sky (establish night exterior location and then reel in the close-ups

Re: Shooting day for night

Since no one seems to have any grabs, I figure I'll ask a question. The scene I have to shoot is in the woods (good news I hear since the only light source I have to worry about is the sun).---still talking about shooting day for night---

THe only problem is that I'd like the three characters to be carrying flashlights and a lantern...there's also a scene where they all have some dialogue while sitting around the lantern. Any idea if this is possible when shooting DFN and if so can anyone give some tips as to how to go about doing this? THanks a lot everyone.

Re: Shooting day for night

Lanterns and Flashlights during the day, for night. Hmmmm......

When they have this conversatoin around the lantern;does it have to be shot IN THE WOODS? Can it be shot in a controlled environment?

Your'e gonna need some pretty bright light in the WOODS to mimic day for night I think. Once you bring the levels down and adjust the curves everything just crushes away. It can be done however. I'd scout the location for the best optimal light time.

Flashlights? Perhaps this can be achieved using mag lights or similiarly powerful beams but as far as the light spreading onto the ground or objects, forget it.

Re: Shooting day for night

Thanks John. Yeah, the scene must be in the woods. Sounds like I have some re-thinking and re-writing to do.
