Shooting Charges?

So I couldnt find a suitable home for this anywhere else on the forum (if their is, I just am blind I suppose)

I have a neighbor who owns a knitting shop. She wants to have video clips on her shop's website of different techniques, that answer different questions, etc-So she wants me to shoot it. I dont envision it entailing to much gear, but I know she wants some short clips that I shoot to be on the website, so my question is, how much do I charge her? Ive never really done for hire stuff before, and Im trying to get an idea of what a reasonable rate would be, or if I charge one lump amount for the project, or by the hour? And I assume I need to tack on tape stock to the charge as well? Thanks for any advice you folks may have!!

Rates vary enormously. If this is not your profession and you're just doing it because you want to then you should charge whatever you think if fair. If you make your living shooting then you need to establish standard rates. As a shooter it is typical to have a day rate and then equipment is charged speparately depending upon what is needed. Editing seems to vary even more. I've heard everything from hourly to daily to flat rate. It's all about knowing what it takes and not digging yourself into a hole and regretting taking the job. if you're doing this for fun, don't stress over the money of it.

Well, Im pretty much doing it as a first paying gig-The woman owns a very successful business, and I would assume she wouldnt do anything for anyone for free if she didnt have to-This isn't my profession, Im a producer in tv news, not necessarily a SHOOTER, but have hopes of doing more on a freelance basis if I can.

I would be thinking out of the box on this one. I would say to her I will do the web stuff for free, if you can sign exclusive rights to produce and distribute a knitting dvd series. Convince her that the series can expand her business and name recognition, plus renewable income. Man wish I was in this business, LOL.

best of luck

1) What kind of camera and gear will be used?
2) Will you be editing any of the footage?

For just taking my camera and shooting, I charge around $65 an hour.

My thoughts on the shoot are this:

-I know she wants some video to use for her website, that I think would exclusively be used for that purpose. I shoot it, edit it down to some video vignettes for her website, and she then owns the clips I guess?

-My other thought is she has a knitting group that uses knitting as a form of therapy-Im thinking of shooting a short doc on them, producing a nice 7-8 minute short on their group. I certainly would be the owner of that material, and not allow her use of it unless she purchased it. Jesus, I just need to get an agent, it makes things so much easier.

That doc idea might actually go somewhere. As for her web video, you might want to give her a package rate per segment, and try for the doc as a separate project.
