Shooting at different bitrates for Bluray?

Now sure where to post this but since it's an HD question I hope here is OK.

My big question is that since our final medium will be Bluray for upcoming HD projects. My understanding is that the max bitrate for authoring BD is 48Mb/s. Since this is the case, is there any point to shooting beyond a bitrate of say 50Mb/s (say with a nanoflash) because I’m assuming a higher bitrate would be lost anyway after rendering for BD?

I’m guessing it might play out like this…

If one shoots at 100Mb/s, edits and burns a BD master which has a max bitrate of 45Mb/s (to stay away from the 48Mb/s limit) would you end up with more detail/sharper image with less artifacting that if you shot your source material at 50Mb/s which in itself would create less detail over 100Mb/s?

I guess I’m wondering if the some CODECs are smart enough to realize that the source is already at 50Mb/s and essentially does little compression when doing your final render which I would image makes almost an identical copy of your 50Mb/s source footage OR would it just compress everything down again regardless of what the source is (like optimizing an already optimized Jpeg in Photoshop – the quality just keeps degrading)? So by shooting your source at 100Mb/s your final render would noticeably look “better” that shooting at 50Mb/s even though in the end both materials would end up on a 48Mb/s Bluray disk?

what your suggesting would work if the recorded media is the compatible format for bd or dvd and the bitrate is compatible. and then you can only split the file at key frames as well. no heavy editing or frame accurate editing, no transitions, no effects, no color correction.
