shooting arc welding

I'm about to shoot a piece with a DVX100a that involves arc welding. I know that this has been discussed before, suggestions about strong ND filters etc. I need to capture footage similar to that on Monster Garage, East Coast Choppers etc. and a heavy ND filter will darken too much of the surrounding imagery. Has anyone actually shot arc welding with the DVX100a and if so can you describe the set up? I know that someone said they burned their chips attempting this. Thanks, Craig

I've shot hours and hours of arc welding with no filters with no problems except for a killer headache afterwards.

You'll hopefully be looking at the viewfinder while shooting. I doubt that viewfinder can transmit the harmful levels of light that the welding produces.

My concerns would be over slag coming off of the welding process. Stay back far enough, or make sure you have the lense protected from flying, red-hot pieces of metal.

Otherwise, I've shot lots of welding and its not a problem. But it was different back in the days of the plumbicon or saticon tube-camera days. (creaky rocking chair sound...)
