Shooting an outdoor concert and need mic

Hey everybody,

I'm shooting an outdoor concert and will be doing alot of shots from infront of the stage and on stage getting footage of the band.

What is a good type of mic to have or should I just use the standard onboard HVX mic?

I have an audio matrix going into another cam so the audio doesn't need to be perfect but I was just curious what you guys would suggest.

with the limited info..i would say you're going to be using the other camera's audio (board feed?) for your entire edit, so dont worry about putting a better mic on your stage cam.
The audio differences between the 2 cameras would sound goofy switching back and forth.
 
I don't have a lot of experience shooting concerts but here's my 2c...

Walking around with the camera near the front of the stage is almost certainly going to give you a lot of clipped, uneven sound that is very unlikely to be useable.

If you're getting a matrix board mix that may or may not sound useable (depending on the mixer and if the system is set up correctly) but what would sound great is a portable stereo recorder (Zoom, Tascam, Marantz, ect..) and have that near the front of house position (wherever the sound mixer is) set so it doesn't clip at the SPL once everthing gets going. That'll give you crowd and music sounds which you could blend with the direct feed very well if you wanted to.
 
Depending on who is doing all the mixing for the show that night(hopefully they are good with mixing levels-they should be but not always true) have your second camera which I assume will do all your wide shots take a feed from the mixer. I'm not a camera person but that is what I generally suggest or what I do is go in the sound both or wherever the audio is setup and have them run an output into my recorder and record all the stuff from there. That way we at least have some good audio to match up with what didn't come out good on the camera. Just a suggestion.
