Shooting a Wedding with the DVX 100B

I am shooting a couple of weddings with my DVX 100B in September and I need some help with the camera settings. 60i, 30P, or 24P? From the posts on this site it seems that everyone is torn between the three. I want the cinematic feel but a lot of users are saying that 60i produces the only decent looking slow motion. I was thinking 30P in Squeeze Mode for output to DVD and Web but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I use 24p for the 18% compression it gives without even trying. You do need to make sure your nle can handle removing the pulldown to take advantage of 24 fps.

Squeeze mode does give a better aspect ratio, regardless of fps selection.

The one detraction for using 24 fps is autofocus is real slow. But I've found that for some set of live events autofocus is problematic any way. So using the pushbutton override on manual focus allows for better control.

I use the 30p. It's a good compromise between the 24p, which can be challenging, and the crappy sitcom look of 60i. I may use the 24p sometime, after I practice with it more, but for now I'm sticking with 30p.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I shot the first wedding in 30P Squeeze Mode but now that I have the footage in my timeline in FCP it doesn't look so good and there are interlaced lines in every frame. I thought that shooting in "Progressive" Mode would fix this.

I don't have FCP, so I can't 'help' on details. However, when I import into After Effects, I have to sometimes 'reinterpret' the footage to get the fielding correct. When I shoot 24pa, I have to remove the pull down.

It may be that your sequence or project is not set correctly for interpreting the 30p
footage.

I have the DVX100A, I shoot weddings on 30P, squeezed, its works great since I do Same-day edits, the slo-mo looks great

Your hunch is right: 30P is a good compromise, especially when one destination is the Web.

I agree. All my shooting with the DVX100b has been 30p. Great compromise, clients love it.

In your timeline settings, it will most likely say for field dominance upper or lower field first. Change it to none. Make sure your timeline is set to 29.97.

Yes I was also wondering about the 60i,30p,24p for a wedding video and I'd have to go for the 24p.....maybe.

I personally DO NOT like shooting anything at 30p. The reason being is it is only IMO good for web video shoots. For DVD it is not a supported format, you have to convert it to 60i. For web-only deliverly that is my preferred format though.

I'd go for either 24p (ideally) or 60i. Reason being is that 24p is a supported progressive DVD format and when upconverted to HD it looks really nice. The same cannot be said with 30p, again as you must convert to 60i to be viewed properly (less judder motion) or if you convert it to 24p for progressive you may as well have shot 24p to begin with!

I started shooting anamorphic (squeezed) 30p footage last year to accommodate everyone's flat screen tv's and for SD, the footage looks great. The DVX100B is such an amazing versatile camera.

I only recommend 30p 30/shutter when shooting squeezed. 60i, 60/shutter does not look good.
