Shooting a music video with beta?

I'm directing a music video this sunday and the producer has access to a beta cam in which he shot the pilot in which I'm doing the music video for (which is currently running on tv) What's better to shoot with the dvx or beta cam for this music video?

Re: Shooting a music video with beta?

Also does anyone has a link preferbly quicktime to a music video that was shot on beta or movie clip.

Re: Shooting a music video with beta?

You'll get a much better idea, to simply shoot an identical 5 minutes with both the DVX, and the Beta, then decide for yourself.

No clip is going to help you decide, I'm afraid.

Re: Shooting a music video with beta?

I have seen music videos shot with a betacam, I personally think its not a good idea, if you want to see kind of what the look will be look at your local news show, news stations usually shoot their stuff on betacams. The DVX will get you closer to a film look (if you have the right lighting, settings, etc.)

Re: Shooting a music video with beta?

A lot will depend on the model of betacam and how you light it and how you handle it in post.
There is a reason most network shows use betacam. It is a higher color saturation among many things. My beta has a $10,000 lens. Think the DVX glass is better?
Most of the reason news looks like it does is the slap dash way its shot.
If you have a late model betacam with a quality lens and excellent lighting you can do excellent work. In post you can add film looks to mimic that aspect of the DVX. The film look is only one small part of the picture making process.
Think about it...2/3" chip instead of a 1/3" chip; 4:2:2 instead of 4:1:1; 5:1 compression instead of component uncompressed, $10,000 lens instead of ?, a silky smooth zoom control instead of a plastic toy.
If the networks could get as good a picture with a $4000 camera instead of a $40000 camera, they would.

Re: Shooting a music video with beta?

PS
I've seen some absolutely terrible work shot on 16mm & 35mm compared to work I've done with my DVX. So is the DVX better than 35mm?

Re: Shooting a music video with beta?

I agree, the type of betacam does matter, and yes you probably can get a sharper image with most betacams than a DVX after all it is a dv cam, but as far as the "look" and "feel" you can achieve with the DVX many would say that it looks more like film because of the way the DVX handles 24p.

You can usually achieve more "filmlike" footage with a DVX than a Betacam even if you convert Beta footage to 24P. Ive done it.

p.s. It is the carpenter not the tools...

I agree but now it's neither b/c the carpenter doesn't have any tools.
