Hi, I'm shooting a film and it's supposed to look like home footage (say, cloverfield status). How would I go about doing the effect that makes it look like the tape is is skipping, for when i cut to different shots like they did on cloverfield? I'm sorry if I am not describing it well i just don't know how to explain it. Any tips would help thank you

I realize that, it's just instead of simply cutting it, I'd like to figure out some way of making it look like it was skipping or something so it doesnt just look like i was trying to just cut to cover up switching scenes, if you get what I'm saying

You may have to use an effect. I don't know if you are using FCP but it has stock effect called "Bad TV" that could be good for that. Of course you would have to manipulate it to your liking. Magic Bullet has some stuff as well. You just have to get creative with effects. Or you could go into AE or Motion and make your own. couple that with some good editing to make it "skip" and you are golden.

Thanks, I'm on Premiere Pro, but I'll figure something out to make it work. I'm not really the greatest editor, but I'll test some stuff around. Thanks guys

He posted this in the Premiere section; why would he be on FCP? :)

Do you mean you want it to look like someone stopped the tape and then started it up a bit later? All you really have to do is run clips together with no particular transition. If you really want to sell it, put a time stamp in the corner and shift the time.

You could also put in some digital artifacting on the clip when it switches. Akin to the blocky artifacts that show up on tape sometimes.

I want to say there is a plug-in for it somewhere out there. Do you also have After Effects? You can do it in there.

EXACTLY, artifacting was the word i was looking for. Well, I've been having some trouble with my computer lately so I dont exactly have AE and im not that great with it anyway, but you guys have given me a few ideas already. Thanks a bunch

Boris continuum complete has a damaged tv filter that's really nice, it is one of the plugins they used on Cloverfield for the look your talking about, you can do all sorts of cool stuff with it. I know your on premiere so a possiblity you have AE?

Watch out with this 'style'. I thought Cloverfield was really off the mark for what they were doing with the video 'glitches'. If you are pretending to shoot on an old analog VHS camera, then static and glitches are worth putting in.

But if this is supposed to come from a modern digital camera, you just don't see these things unless something is really wrong with the camera, in that case, the video would be filled with these blocks and be unwatchable. This is just magnetic tape I'm talking about.

If this is supposed to be HDD recorded, well, forget it. One wrong bit and you could lose your whole clip.

It's going to be as old as someone tapping the microphone or feedback when they first speak into it.
