Shooting A Feature Film on the Ursa Mini 4.6k Camera = How Many Gigabytes (GBs)?

I was curious what it would be like to shoot a feature film with the Ursa Mini 4.6k with the CFast cards and the current transfer rates listed. Since the cards are a bit expensive, how many times would you have to dump the cards off and re-use them to finish a feature. So here are a few numbers below that go further into actual shooting ratios. If it takes you 3 takes to get one shot, that's for example a 3 to 1 shooting ratio. Something most directors probably do not do. 6:1 or 9:1 is likely more realistic. There is of course the option to delete bad takes off the card as you go. The below numbers are a rough estimate because the card might say 256 but only so much of it is usable, which may vary based on brand.

4608 x 2592 -- CinemaDNG Raw 3:1 - 180 MB/s
262,144 MB CFast Card / 180 MB/s = 1456.35 / 60 seconds = 24.27 minutes of footage per 256gb card
90 Minute Feature with a 3:1 shooting ratio = 270 minutes / 24.27 = 11.12 data transfers total [2846.72 gb]
6:1 shooting ratio (above x 2) = 22.24 data transfers total [5693.44 gb]
9:1 shooting ratio (above x 3) = 33.36 data transfers total [8540.16 gb]
60 Minute Daily Shoot Amount: 60/24.27 = 2.47 data transfers per day [632.32 gb]
90 Minute Daily Shoot Amount: 90/24.27 = 3.70 data transfers per day [947.2 gb]

3840 x 2160 -- Apple ProRes 444 XQ - 312.5 MB/s
262,144 MB CFast Card / 312.5 MB/s = 838.86 / 60 seconds = 13.98 minutes of footage per 256gb card
90 Minute Feature with a 3:1 shooting ratio = 270 minutes / 13.98 = 19.31 data transfers total [4943.36 gb]
6:1 shooting ratio (above x 2) = 38.62 data transfers total [9886.72 gb]
9:1 shooting ratio (above x 3) = 57.93 data transfers total [14830.08 gb]
60 Minute Daily Shoot Amount: 60/13.98 = 4.29 data transfers per day [1098.24 gb]
90 Minute Daily Shoot Amount: 90/13.98 = 6.43 data transfers per day [1646.08 gb]

1920 x 1080 -- Apple ProRes 444 XQ - 62.5 MB/s
262,144 MB CFast Card / 62.5 MB/s = 4194.30 / 60 seconds = 69.90 minutes of footage per 256gb card
90 Minute Feature with a 3:1 shooting ratio = 270 minutes / 69.90 = 3.86 data transfers total [988.16 gb]
6:1 shooting ratio (above x 2) = 7.72 data transfers total [1976.32 gb]
9:1 shooting ratio (above x 3) = 11.58 data transfers total [2964.48 gb]
60 Minute Daily Shoot Amount: 60/69.90 = .85 data transfers per day [217.6 gb]
90 Minute Daily Shoot Amount: 90/69.90 = 1.28 data transfers per day [327.68 gb]

Below are the specs for basic calculation:

422 4k pro res is 360gb for an hour rolled 444 might be twice that?

i shot a feature on the bmc4k 4k 422 mainly we shot a card am and a card pm

thats 500gb a day - it was basically a full time job to back up and make 1080 dailies and of course used a lot of external hd space

if you are actually shooting a feature you should research this properly and even consider the fs7 and xavc codec - the price of the camera will be saved in drives

You won't have time to delete bad takes and it is bad practice. Also you will burn tape while the director modifies performance or the slate intern fails to clear frame unless you are with a slick crew

I did exactly this and even managed to get an AMC theater release. These days, the gatekeepers could care less what you shot it with and what codec, it just has to look like a real movie to them. Things like framing, focus, and production design trump resolution and color depth.
