Shooting a Feature at 80°N

H*A*W*S is the title of a feature project I currently have in development which will be shot entirely on location in one of the most remote areas on the planet at latitude 80°N on Ellesmere Island in Canada's high Arctic. It has a budget of just under $20 million. It is my second major feature project which is following "Plastic" my current feature project.

Completion means it would qualify for the Guinness World Record as the most northerly narrative feature ever produced.

I'm really stoked as well as kind of nostalgic for the same location is where I happened to meet Sir Edmund Hillary while he was still alive. It was also one of the places that nurtured my passion for photography and filmmaking although it was the work I shot in the Western Arctic that was featured in the Canada pavillion at Expo '86.

Sounds cool. One of my "things to do before I die" is one of the canoe trips on Ellesmere. Unfortunately it's a bit out of my price range at the moment. Keep us up to date as it comes along.

That's pretty cool. Hadn't even heard of Ellesmere Island until this post. Congrats and best of luck with production.

I'll be going up there a couple times at least before its reaches production stage. First will be just to see how things have changed since I was there last and I haven't hired anyone yet to document the project as I'm up to my ears with "Plastic" at the moment.

Here's an old polariod of me with "Ed" as he came through on his way to the Pole in '85.

He was on some kind of a sponsored deal with Neil Armstrong. The folks handling Armstrong were insistent that Neil doesn't get his picture taken with anyone unless he paid for it. Hillary was great and came down to the station and had tea with the staff and shoot the breeze.

Wow, that sounds exciting! Best of luck!

What was it like meeting Mr Hillary? I can imagine him to be very inspiring no?

A very thrilling experience to be sure and a very down to earth person.

Cool man, great to hear that on top of his Captain Awesome award he is down to earth too! Very Cool!
I'm a big fan of anyone who overcomes any kind of hardship! Be it a mountain, a sickness or a business issue - Some really inspiring people out there!

Awesome. I want to be part of the crew... or cast. How can I help?

You'll have to be patient. As I mentioned in the original post I'm working on my current feature project "Plastic". However, because of all of the the extra hoops to jump through with the government concerning the depts. involved, additional bureaucracy, paperwork, accomodations, sealift, etc., the development stage for H*A*W*S is going to take several months longer than normal. Therefore, I'm starting the development stage for it now. Pre-production is still more than a year out, let alone casting and hiring crew.
