Shooting a concert

Hey all,

I'm going to be shooting a concert in NYC in a few weeks. I come from the commercial world. Any advice on camera settings seeing that is stage lights of multiple intensity and color. I'm concerned about color temp, gain, etc. This is a high end act that is internationally known so the lights will be typical of any national act that you have seen. Any advice is appreciated.

Best advice would be to get there early and talk with the techs that are setting up the concert. Maybe even see if you can get a chance to run a few tests.

indoors or outdoors? if its indoors you will need to have them turn up the lights all the way unless they have a few semis full of lights.

24p mode is very dark, unless you're going to use 60i, which is still pretty dark. I shot a concert at Pianos on the Lower East Side and full stage lighting was barely enough. this was a small club with a handful of PARs and it was tough. If they guys moved a little too much, they went into dark areas and disappeared. Edit! Cut to another performer. That's it.

I don't use gain and don't recommend it. I also used a shotgun mic on one channel and the board output into another channel and mixed the two in post to get a good sound from the board and the ambience of the room and crowd reactions.

Watch that board output, its line, not mic! Lesson: try to get a DAT right off the board and just sync later than deal with getting sound on the camera.

Hope this helps.

Hey dude - Absolutely, Positively, Somehow ->

Check out "Dave Chappelle's Block Party"

It's a really entertaining film and works really well for the concert feel. You feel like you're there. Check it out.

I'm by no means an expert, but I shot a live music video for a band this past friday and what I did was white balance off of one of the white stage par can lights and my footage can out great. I shot mostly on stage with the band. Now, when I shot the crowd, there was a blue tint to the footage (it was at night)

Thanks for all the replies. I plan on shooting this 60i. The DVX is going to be a second camera that I will be setting up for a novice to use. I will be using the SDX900, again 60i. I want to try to avoid using gain if I can and I thougth about putting the DVX on full auto. This is going to be a mixed format shoot, the artist gets a video feed from the venue, and has a couple camcorders (yikes), I am simply offering a couple cameras that will provide better footage that can be intercut with the other cams. The venue is indoors for those who asked.
