shooting a band for their music

video which will be completely live

I need suggestions on ways to take on this video shoot. I have some limitations.

1. The band can only play the song for the video twice in their set.
2. I only have one camera.
3. There is no time to film pick ups of each band member before the show so i essentially have to get all my footage through out about 6 songs.

How can i maximize the amount of usable footage when shooting with these constraints.

I figure with my limitations the video will come out something like this

but i want there to be a little bit more to the live footage

Just one camera will definitely hurt your options - you don't know anyone with a camera who can also turn up and shoot? You could give them the simpler task of shooting general wide shots while you concentrate on closer shots.

Regardless, I suggest:
- concentrate on closer shots of the band while they're performing the actual song
- but also shoot them performing all their other songs, with a random mix of close-ups and longer shots - these (video only, of course) will be good for cutaway shots in post-production, with a little work you should be able to use a brief clip of the band performing another song but time it to match the audio of the song you're actually interested in.
- also get some crowd shots. and anything else visually interesting, again to let you cutaway from the band and give you some editing freedom.

You'll be using live sound? Trusting your on-camera sound is very risky - ideally see if you can get someone to record the sound separately with a good quality field sound recorder.

actually i'm going to be using the recording straight from their album

thanks for the tips. ive been looking for someone to help me but im not having any luck so im just preparing to go it alone.

Using the sound from the album will certainly help with sound quality :) but I sure hope they play the song live very similarly or you're going to spend an awful lot of time editing video to match the audio.

Hey. Here's a little concert videography demo we pulled together from this band we filmed. They were supposed to pay for it, but ended up falling through. They weren't replying to our emails. Long, sad story. Anyways...

We had a 2 camera set up, but only got each song once. So I figure it's similar to a 1 camera set up, but getting the song twice. But this was all live audio. Where are you located?

For a music video shot on one camera and your other limitations as above, it's not bad at all - well done.

Did you make color correction with a plug-in? Can you teach me how to reach that color and image?

Thanks for all and keep the good work

I just did the color correction by messing around with brightness, contrast, and messed around with the levels. Thats it. it might also have an odd look because there was orange and black cellophane all over the ceiling.
