Shocking Movie Moments

I saw that MSN article earlier and I agree, it was mostly lame. To me, one of the most shocking movie moments -- specifically movie endings -- is the end of Planet of the Apes. The angle of the shot of ... well, I don't want to spoil the ending for anyone who hasn't seen it. But definitely one of the great movie endings of all time and definitely shocking -- at least on an emotional level, and very well done visually.

Even though I knew the story going in I found HEAVENLY CREATURES to be shocking in the end. Just the brutality and context of the crime and the build-up was numbing.

Wonderful film but it leaves you numb in the end.

How about "To Live and Die in LA" where the main character (a.k.a. protagonist) is killed before the end?

That was pretty original for the time and a bit shocking. They shot an alternate ending where he is just badly wounded, just in case they wanted to chicken out.

I love that, when William Peterson is shot, I freaked out... good call.

MsManhattan, you're right "Planet of the Apes" should definitely be on that list.

Hudson I agree, "Heavenly Creatures" is an awesome flick. It's the first Peter Jackson film I saw and it blew me away.

A Dog Day Afternoon - When you find out he's gay.
Fight Club - The part where you find out Tyler is Jack.
Soylent Green - ummm..."Soylent Green is People!"

Don't. It's ****ing nasty dude. (Raaaalllppphhhhhhh) It's not shocking but just plain foul.

I agree! What's up? No SIXTH SENSE?

The dude who made the list sucks. Come on; he has PINK FLAMINGOS, SCANNERS and THE LONG GOODBYE on the list? No one has even seen those films.

How about:

The Sixth Sense - Bruce realizes (as we do) that he is dead.
The Empire Strikes Back - 4 words. "I am your father!"
The Planet of the Apes - The Statue of Liberty buried on the beach.
The Godfather 2 - At the Cuban club, when Michael realizes Fredo has been ****ing him. Man that's intense.

While I agree EMPIRE is a major shock that was experienced worldwide, if you haven't seen Pink Flamingos or Scanners you are sorely missing out. Get to renting.

Hmmm. The most shocking moment in film history for me is finding out Merv Griffin was the elevator killer in Steve Martin's "The Man with Two Brains".
