shock mount & softie for Sennheiser MKH-416

i'm upgrading some gear and putting together a shotgun boom kit. i think i've decided to go with the sennheiser mkh-416 for the mic. b&h suggests the audio technica AT8415 for a shockmount, and rycote 18mm small hole softie. will i be good to go with these? any alternate suggestions?

i'm also planning to get the Gitzo GB3650 - Six-Section Carbon Fiber Boompole that extends to a max of 155.5" for $300, and the sound devices mix pre. for the time being with my budget i'll just take audio straight into my hvx. i'm already a little over, but not by much.

basically, any reasons i would avoid any of these items?

thanks for advice.

k-tek k-zepp will replace the softie and shockmount and beat them hands-down. Boom and mixpre (or SD 302 even better) are great also. Get sony 7506 headphones for $100

thanks mike. can you give me specific models for the softie and shockmount so i can look those up?

several people have mentioned the 302 as a better option, but i think that puts me over budget my too much. what else do i gain besides the 3rd channel on the 302?

I would say don't get a softie, get the k-tek kzepp or rycote s-series. You can find the k-tek at trewaudio.com I am not sure which one you want, but I would guess medium. look it up at k-tek's site.

about the 302. download the manuals for the 302 and mix pre from sound devices website and read both. You will quickly see the 302 is superior. Better limiters, better low cut (12 db vs 6db) line or mic level out, M/S stereo decoding etc etc. Nothing wrong with the mix pre...good preamps etc. It is really a stepping stone that holds it's value well when you are ready to sell and move up.

rycote s-series includes a suspension kit. if i go that route does that mean no need for the k-tek shock mount?

thanks again.

yes, it is either rycote s series or k-tek k-zepp, your choice.

Are you going to read the SD manuals? No one ever does when I suggest it, but I did and it put me over the edge.

The Rycote S-Series is a kit containing everything - it has the best shockmount on the market (with the new "Lyre" mounts), basket with integral hairy cover and includes a flexible XLR output cable that minimises the transmission of cable noise. It's actually slightly cheaper than a Softe (if you include the Softie mic. tail).

The "Lyre" suspension is so good that I am changing all my shockmounts for all my mics over to these (InVision Series)

The headphones I use are the HD 25-1.

The Rycote looks intriguing, I would probably go for one based on what I have heard about them around here. People do love their k-zepps, but this seems like a newer design.

Another headphone option is the Beyerdynamic DT770. They are super comfortable and sound amazing.

thanks again guys. i'm set on headphones with my sonys.

i'm going to read up on the s-series. thanks for the tip.

OK - someone invents the best shockmount on the planet, bar none.

Technically superb and protected by patents - and - actually *cheaper* than all the others.

And you prefer to stick with the old - like preferring sail over steam.

OK - it's up to you - but I found the Rycote shocks so good I'm swapping over to them for all my mics.

I agree with you on the Invision - haven't got the full S-300 kit yet but planning on one soon - I'm sold on 'em. The Schoeps CMC641 is notoriously sensitive to handling but with mine in an Invision #7 mount on an internal coiled cable 12' Loon Boom, I'm having no problems with handling noise, even without the Cut-1 filter. Even rapping on the bottom section of the pole with my knuckle requires a fairly good thwack before it's audible

The Rycote "Lyre" suspension is the basis of the S-series *and* InVision mounts and will also be in the full windshield kits (older kits can be upgraded to the "Lyre" mounts at nominal cost (just contact Rycote).
