This was a magnificent surprise. I'd heard positive things which made me check out this new series on PBS and I'm glad I gave it a look. Sure this is the umpteenth version of Sherlock, but they did everything right, and updating it gave it a new edge. House is an excellent modern re-invention of Holmes as well but seeing a true Holmes in modern times, solving murders, is much more fun. The casting is superb, with Benedict Cumberbatch a perfect Holmes and Martin Freeman a great counterweight as Watson. There's something magical that happens when you get a strong dynamic going on between two well matched actors, and that happens here. The location work is great as well and the writing in this pilot episode was sharp as a tack. Anyway, I found it truer to its origins and more satisfying than that James Bond movie masquerading as a Holmes tale that was the Robert Downey version. Great stuff.
