Sherlock Holmes: Game fo Shadows SPOILERS!!!!

I thought the first Sherlock was entertaining enough but for some reason this one felt really flat to me, despite have a decent amount of action and goings on. Maybe I was in a bad mood though, I was bored the whole movie while my friend liked it.

I thought the segments where Sherlock anticipates what's going to happen went way overboard, to the point it was silly.

2.75/5

I rate it a touch below the first, more for lack of anything new than anything else ...

In fairness, sometimes things didn't go the way he anticipated -- which was in its own way a clever twist. Or at least an unexpected one.

For readers of the books it was amusing to see how the movie managed to follow the story but also move in a new direction -- I'd suggest that has been the success of the movies, taking a hero that was an action hero in his day, and rewriting him enough that he doesn't come across the dry, asexual hero that PBS has left us with.

All in fun, I gave it 7*/10. It wouldn't convert Holmes haters, or for that matter those that think him a God -- but fun for the rest of us.

Cheers,

I just want to watch a Sherlock Holmes whodunit. I'm tired of seeing a bad James Bond knockoff. Where's the mystery when we know the villain throughout the entire film?

I felt it had a few too many action setpieces. The sequence on the train was enjoyable, but could have been cut easily.

I thought the sequence near the end with the chess game while they describe their plotting was fantastic.

I felt like they took one of the coolest parts of the first one, the deduction based slowmo sequences, and just played them out so hard in this movie.

This movie was like a 1000 fps demo reel.

It was fun, and it had other enjoyable parts, but they just kept harking back to that gimmick.

I love how they used it in the first one, and loved the moriarty fight at the end, but there was just so much fluff in this movie

As I said, it wouldn't convert those that weren't fans of the original -- in this case Conan Doyle's "The Final Problem" resolves the ongoing combat with Moriarty. It wasn't a whodunit -- it was a Moriarty gets it ... The movie takes liberties, but stays cleverly close to the guts of the original. And in truth, the original stories were the James Bonds of the day -- pulp writing (serialized in newspapers no less) aimed at a lowbrow audience. That they've survived is testament to Doyle's insight, and his advancement of what we now know as the 'buddy story' ... Not literature, but fun -- sort of like the movie. Your mileage may vary!

Cheers,
