Sheriff and Paramedics ?

Writing a short film that will require a Sheriff car, Sheriff and Deputy, Ambulance and two Paramedics. What is my best way to accomplish this? Anybody know if actual Sheriffs and Paramedics / Ambulance services will "rent out" their personal and vehicles for use in making a film for a certain $ per hour or day? This is up in Duluth MN so no Hollywood rental companies up this way for props, etc. I did email the local Sheriff's office, and also a EMS/paramedic training advisor at the local college to see if I might rent the ambulance and uniforms/students, will see what happens from those emails.

ps: I can not figure out where to post discussions about preproduction or production on dvxuser.com, is there some main forum for this, I can't seem to figure it out. Could the moderators perhaps consider adding a forum for production or preproduction for issues like this?

Damn you lucked out! I should get so lucky (well, hard work on your part). Yeah I better wait and talk to them in person I guess. I wonder, if absolutely necessary, could a filmmaker buy the uniforms, fake gunbelts, fake badges, use a brown SUV and put a fake magnetic sign on the side making it look like a rural sheriff vehicle and sheriff? I could potentially also use DNR Conservation Officer too, they would logically be in a rural area for my story, a cabin in the woods, perhaps poking around for poachers. Or I suppose I could write out the law enforcement, just have a friend find injured protagonist and call 911, have paramedics arrive.

so, i had two police cars, four policemen, an F.D. EMT truck with two (on duty!) EMT2's, an actor in a police uniform, and an actress in distress.
And in the meantime, 3 banks were robbed, 2 people died of gunshot wounds, and then the banks burned down... Also in the news, the City Council is rethinking it's position on Film Making in the city. Film at 11.

also contact your local emergency managment, they often have cars that look like cop cars, but they belong to the members, (lights and all) and many of them also have an ambulance or two.

Great idea. I totally forgot about option of other "law enforcement", perhaps even just a security patrol company, they are private and probably much more interested in earning a few extra bucks for a few hours work.

Randall,

I think Mark McShane is the city rep for filming permits. If you're going that route anyway, he might be a good place to start.

I've got a scene with police cars for an upcoming shoot and have been thinking about it. You can rent cop uniforms from a costume house cheap - <$10. Several security companies have cars that look right if you just cover their signage and put police signs on and they have rooftop lights that just need a little red and blue get to look right. Haven't tried talking to these folks yet but it should work...

THanks, good to know for film in Duluth here. This story for now with the sheriff/other will likely take place rural, I am thinking up the north shore (Knife River area) of Lake Superior, lakeside lodge cabin if i can not find a rentable remote cabin in the woods. Maybe if I talk to Realty companies, they must have shacks in the woods they are trying to sell, perhaps vacant, owners wanting some cash to help make a mortgage payment.
