Sharknado -too violent for TV?

I've heard the title "sharknado" tossed around... this is the first time I saw anything. That had me laughing to tears... everybody will own this... it reminds me of Tremors... hopefully it's as entertaining as it looks.

Can you imagine the pitch for this? Probably about a full minute of silence and stares... eventually broken by a slowly building clap from the executive... then a standing ovation...

Oh, unfortunately not. Not by a million billion miles.

This was horrible. And not in the good way. This was awful. And bad. And without any redeeming qualities, other than the pitch. It reminds one of "Snakes on a Plane" -- great title, great pitch, terrible execution, except -- compared to this, Snakes on a Plane was frickin' Citizen Kane.

I love me some bad movies, and I LOVE the idea that filmmakers are having bold outrageous ideas and diving in with both feet. Snakes on a Plane? Yes, please. Mega Pirahna? Absolutely wonderful. Giant Shark vs. Mega Octopus? Sold. Birdemic? Best time I've had in a theater in years, maybe decades.

So Sharknado, boy, that must have been the funnest pitch session of all, like you said. But in actual execution? Watching this, I felt like Satan himself stood over us all, a giant malevolent presence, then turned his back to us, lifted his skirt, squatted down and blew explosive diarrhea on us all.

Oh, but for what could have been...

Yeah, that was one of the things I found annoying -- it wasn't just one time, but they made references to Jaws over and over. Shooting the compressed air cylinder in the shark's mouth. Her story about how she got her scar. The shark landing at the Chinese Theater and leaving a "handprint" -- right in front of Spielberg's. If it had been one clever sly reference, specifically the chopper, that would have been okay, but doing it over and over, it was like -- oh no you din't! You don't get to reference Jaws, the father of all summer blockbusters...

As much as I like to see a great white shark fly through the air and attack someone that is holding a chainsaw I just didn't think I'd be able to sit through the bad acting and utter lack of story. I liked the trailer, but I felt like I'd already seen all the good parts.

On a side note, SyFy channel is really going downhill. It's like MTv a chanel that doesn't play music, but is called music television. You see less and less science fiction on SyFy and more and more wrestling and infomercials, and most of the sci fi you do see is the really bad stuff from teh 90's or something.

Not a side note for me, but a big glaring problem with the industry. They pass on a new Battlestar Galactica series, and instead put the money into movies like this!? Maybe not everyone is a fan of BSG, and sure some people like the cheesy bad films, but there's no more quality sci-fi on TV anymore, on any channel. Sci-Fi on tv had a slow start, went up slowly, started rising, peaking with Battlestar, then fell off a cliff.

I also feel the 'so bad it's good' movie is just getting to be too much. It's an over-used marketing gimmick that just masks low budgets, poor talent, and hopes for high revenue. It's like the reality shows of Movies.
