"Share DVD" on a network login

FCP X apparently doesn't know how to "share" a DVD from the X interface. It will process the proper sound/video files but then stops operation (at asking for a disc).

I tested using a local login and it worked just fine.

I assume X doesn't see the user desktop / movie folder and stops the function (without an error prompt) after creating the files.

Damn, Apple. Damn...

Does anyone know of a workaround for this?

I was just accidentally emailed by someone about this post, even though it's not my post. So I thought I'd check in here. When you say "network login", can you be specific? Is it Ethernet or XSAN? Is it an OD login, or a local machine login?

The user home directory is always visible, or you wouldn't be able to log in. What do you mean that X doesn't see it?

If it stops when it asks you to insert a disk, do you hear the disk spin up? How long do you wait? Is the DVD drive doing anything? What exactly does it do?

Did you try a different brand of DVD?
Did you try just burning a data DVD from the Finder as a test?

AFAIK it should work, network logins shouldn't matter.

Hi Ben,

Network logins in a mac based classroom with xserve issuing user accounts / desktops via open directory.

I assume its a network login issue because FCX doesn't like network accounts out of the box. Had to use the disk image technique to make X see the user home directory and use it for the events/projects directory structure. Out of the box, it is impossible for FCX to create a new event or project because FCX is looking for a /movies folder on the local hard drive. With a networked login (ethernet, not xsan) using open directory, FCX doesn't see the users /movies folder.

When using "share to DVD", FCX will create the necessary demuxed audio/video files and put it on the events/shared folder inside the disk image directory structure, but then stop there. It issues no error or any prompt. It just stops. This is using a network login.

Testing, I logged in locally, and it worked perfectly. Nothing changed, same DVD media, same process.

So I'm assuming since FCX didn't recognize network logins without the disk image workaround, that it's a similar issue, but don't know how to massage the program to use the network login desktop space for whatever process it stops on. Since there is no error message indicating the error, its difficult to know where to look to resolve the issue.

Hope that made sense.
