Shane Hurlbut ASC, is putting together a test/shootout.
The cameras are:
Sony F65
Sony F5
Arri Alexa
Red Epic
Canon 1DC
Canon C500
Black Magic
GoPro Hero 3
35mm Film

Exciting to watch how this shootout comes out. They said they will start posting results from the black magic camera first in the coming weeks.

Love the shot of the GoPro mounted on a oconnor head! LOL!

rough prediction: based on reality.....

1 F65
2 Alexa
3 35mm
4 Epic
5 F5
6 C500
7 1DC
then everything else....

Hmmm..... Is there any proof of unethical behaviour in the past, else it is just blatant character assassination. I guess he will put the methodology and the results for everyone to see. So why to jump the gun and start attributing motives?

Exactly.

C500
1DC

and then he will dismiss everything else.

Camera shootouts are always interesting and I look forward to seeing the results. I hope they shoot something interesting for the test footage. I think you can create challenging conditions for a shoot out that will still allow for a beautiful shot when the camera holds up. The set up for the last Zacuto shootout was just god awful, and no matter the camera it wasn't going to look pretty.

It is not blatant character assasination, it is history.

Shane Hurlbut lost all credibility on the subject when he declared in front of over 1500 production professional that the 1DC made the Epic/Alexa and F65 "look like sh!t."

I got into it with him over that and so did others and he started back peddling rather quickly.

Just because he has "ASC" after his name doesn't mean that he can't be biased.

Not character assassination; just discussing and predicting. I will be interested to see the results.

Not many pro cinematographers working at his level could be bothered to do these tests for the public; and his site has a lot of interesting insights at no cost to the consumer.

But people have personal preferences, and monetary gain doesn't have to factor into it (just look at all the guys on RedUser who rave about the Red camera for free; they're entitled to talk about and promote something they like).

I reckon he like the Canon 'look' or the Canon 'mojo' or whatever, and probably that will factor in a decision. So my bet is the C500 & 1DC, but I will be happy to lose the bet!

Interesting lineup. He can do what he wants it's his test. Anything labeled "Ultimate" should probably include more cameras that can use the same glass. GoPro can't do that. Maybe this is his version of zacuto's inclusion of the iPhone and GH2.

A cool test at some point in my mind would be ikonoskop, digital bolex, blackmagic to compare against c300, scarlet, f5.

I think he is in the process of camera testing for a new movie Need for Speed so that is why you see the variety because they are testing all options they might use in different situations to see where they lie as opposed to ranking them. I am guessing since they had all the cameras together and Shane being very media savvy he is turning this into a zacuto type battle instead of just camera testing to find capability.

You may disagree Gary, but I think it won't be too much longer before the d16 is available for tests like this :-)

Oh, goody. Here we go again, another "shootout", and before even one frame is shown to the audience, we already have claims and counterclaims of bias, and character attacks. What a surprise.

"shootouts" rarely ever result in any valuable information being learned, and always always degenerate into the ugliest of threads. Do we really have to do that again?

Let Hurlbut do his "shootout", but don't for a moment think that it will have ANY applicability to YOU, and your needs, and your capabilities, and your budget, and what camera is right for your project. It's pointless mental masturbation. The only "shootout" that was worth the time to even look at was the SCCE, and that was primarily because there was NO declaration of "winner", there was only a demonstration of how each performed under identical circumstances, which let you determine what you preferred...

Lest we forget, this was shot on a Red:

And this was shot on a t2i, if I recall correctly:

I know which one looks better. Does that mean a t2i is a "better" camera? Hell no. The Red is far superior in every way. But it does mean that one of these guys spent his time learning filmmaking, instead of wasting it watching "shootouts" and reading "shootout" threads.

Shootouts are designed to to drive traffic to your website. Take everything with a grain of salt.

Cameras like the Gopro have legitimate reasons to be compared to Arri and anything else, because of the potential that a camera with that form factor has. Always good to know how they stack up.

I think "Apocalypto" used the 'micro camera' concept in a few shots. They didn't match, but they got away with it, because the effect and angle was more important to the shot.
