Shaky cam look

As overused as it may be on some productions i would really like to know on what approach people are taking to get the 'shaky cam' look when shooting on digital formats. Im aware theres different levels to this method of shooting i.e. district 9 and cloverfield use an exaggerated shake for obvious reasons where as bourne identity will use it to different effect.

Im curious to know peoples approach at achieving this (more bourne, less cloverfield), would one disable the in camera image stabilizer, or increase the shutter speed to give a more defined representation of movement? Im really curious as ive seen recent independent attempts that look like the camera is shaking due to poor cinematography rather than a purpose stylized look.

Thanks guys.

I never use the image stabilizer anyway because I use a Letus most of the time. But usually I rest my shoulder mount on my belt loop and kind of move naturally with the subject. With the occasional quick zoom for jump cuts if needed. I think it's all about framing and how purposeful the moves are.
