Shakey Cam

Hey guys, quick question: What would be the best way to go about creating Bourne style shakey cam? I'll be shooting with a T2i so I want to shoot with minimal movement to avoid rolling shutter issues. Would it be best to use an expression? Or how about tracking a handheld shot from a CCD camera and applying it to my footage?

Thanks!

If you do it in post you're going to lose some of your frame, or have to tile the edges (which will notice on some shots). Recording a handheld shot with a CCD is the best way to do it in post, though - wiggle doesn't look natural.

I'd imagine as long as you don't go crazy with it, you can get away with filming shakey cam even with a T2i. It's the only way you're going to get a natural look, unfortunately.

If you have access to a CCD camera, then I would really just use that footage for those shots. While there are some things you can do in post, it just won't end up looking very natural.

What's your final output size? There is a really good plug-in called Quaker that simulates handheld quite well. The reason I asked your final output size is to expand on what Dave W said. If your output is less than 1080 you can get away from tiling or losing your frames edge by shooting in 1080 and dropping it into a 720 comp. That way your footage is larger than your comp and can be moved and scaled without losing your frame.

Thanks guys. I'd like to output at 1080 if I could, but I may have to go smaller. The CCD camera I have is just standard def, so actually shooting with that isn't an option. I'll start experimenting with these ideas. Many thanks!
