Hi. I have a copy of shake i have just recieved from apple and i am really stuck with it.

Can any one please give me a site which has lots of free tutorials for shake.

Thanks,
Nathaniel

Hi Nathaniel,

First, you can go to the Apple Shake web pages where you will find Quick tours about Shake and FCP integration and basic workflow.
Next, you can apply for the free Apple online seminar.
The Support pages are a great source of tips and tricks too.

www.fxshare.com is a great source for plugs-ins and add-ons (scripts).

And finally, the tutorial pages at www.cmivfx.com included some gems !

Shake need a little work to be used (hi-end software) but when it works, it's amazing !

Good luck to you

are all these tutorials at http://www.cmivfx.com/tutorials.asp for Sahke or various programs?

how is Shake's learning curve? I'm really debating on getting that or After Effects but not sure which is better/quicker to learn. Shake seems to be better for working with FCP but I've seen a ton of support for AE on the web. Are there any DVD tutorials for Shake?

Sorry

I'll never mention them again!

I of-course plowed thoroughly through them myself before daring to ask any public qustions... -;)

BTW Capt'n - have you dared the new ground of Motion3?

I still find Shake so comforting, but there are compelling (theoretical in my case) arguments for the new Motion in some workflows. Especially the 3d cam thingy looks far better than the MultiPlane node) If I only had time to play with both for a week to check things out...

(Who have opened and played with all but Motion from Studio2...)

Shake's learning curve is a steep one. Well to really get into the guts of it well. But I would definitely make the investment in the Apple Pro Training Series book for it. It will give you a good handle with the really important basics (keyframes, rotoscoping, alpha/mattes, etc.). Its a solid program, but most guys I know that use it, also use a variety of other things as well (it does have its limitations, or well other applications do stuff better).

AE definitely has more support on the web. Not that shake is entirely lacking or such, but AE is wider used (PC + Mac base). I never found Shake that brilliant for working with FCP. I think AE is close enough to par in that regard. Remember, Apple didn't develop Shake they simply bought it and had it limp along to 4.1. I think perhaps the biggest reason behind the end of life and the forthcoming replacement ("Wiggle", "Rattle", whatever).

cheers.

but i need another $500 software called Automatic Duck if i want to use AE with FCP though right?

i've been using Adobe photoshop, indesign, illustrator, etc for years for my design work so do you think it'd be a better investment to just get AE? isn't Shake completely different from AE as far as interface and the way you get around the program?

Yes AE is all about layers and nested layers and the like. One of the knocks on it can be its structure actually. Though being how many people use it, people seem to learn to live with it. Shake uses the nodal interface though, entirely different. I really like the nodal interface myself. Especially because I had full control over how things were organized and it saved that organization.

AE does not require automatic duck. You just export out a Quicktime movie and import that into FCP. Just watch your codec choices.

cheers.
