Shadow wings??????

is there anyway that i can do shadow wings with motion? i have been trying to figure out how to make shadow wings for a while. i tried it with after effects and i just got a mac with motion so i am attempting it with that now? any ideas?

Just have an animated mask layer and then use this mask layer to apply color correction to, then make it semi transparent and darker (eg as an overlay)
