Sgpro + Ex 1

Hi, every body

I know the issues of SGPro with Sony EX 1 with the SG achromat. My question is:

-It´s only a problem with the SG flip unit and it's achromat?
-Can we have better results in terms of sharpness without the flip unit?
-It' s the Brevis flip + SG Pro a better combo?

I read the previous post about brevis flip + SG
I,m going to purchase an SG Pro without flip and a EX1. Now I have a dvx 100.

Have someone any suggestions?

Thanks

Luis!
Estoy en Alicante.
Te comento que tengo una semana con el SGPRO non flip y esta super bien.
Vamos a empezar a filmar www.elmanuscrito.net

No tengo tu respuesta pero no todos los dias uno encuentra alguien cercano por aqui..(no tan cercano , igual...)

Thanks, Wyne, but while the new achromat is in project, Can I use the SG Pro without the flip unit? Is it a good alternative to fix the problem?

Thanks

Hi

The EX1 does not currently work with the non-flipped SGpro but we are also working on a solution for this as well.

Hi there,

I'm in a similar position to the original poster. I currently have a DVX100. I'm planning to buy an SGpro this week (without the flip option) and I may buy an EX1 in the next few months.

How much will it cost to upgrade my SGpro to work with the EX1 if I buy an EX1?

Many thanks,
Jack

Hi Jack,

We have just had a 4 day hire of the EX1 to test with our optimization kit for the flip module. All I can say is we are very excited :) Footage will be up either tonight or tomorrow.

We also have a non flip solution for the EX1, result are equally impressive.

Stay tuned :)

Hi Wayne,

Thanks loads for the reply!

Will I be able to upgrade an existing SGpro v3 (without flip module) to use it with the EX1? Is it simply a case of swapping out the acromat lens?

If I want to use the SGpro on both a DVX100 and an EX1 then will I have to have two different achromat lenses?

Hi Jack

Yes, if you buy now you will be able to upgrade when ready. I do not see it being more than about £50 GBP for the non-flipped upgrade for the EX1. Once upgraded you will be able to use it on both the DVX100 and EX1 without having to swap achromats.

so 50 pounds for a new achro for sg owners? I'm down for that! does it just blow the image up a little more or what, I cant see why a flip is so necessary for people.. If I use a non flipped camera for a while, I just get accustomed to it, no need for a flip just to slow my adapter down anymore....

Can wait, look like I will be going with the Ex1 seeing that the Hmc looks like it will be only like $1000 less then it, and I would like to have 1/2 sensors...

Try editing flipped footage (1080p) on FCP in multicam mode with a flip filter on. It really sucks unless you have a multi disc array ala scsi it gets all choked up. Okay if you don't multitrack but still a bit dicey in 1080 on a MBP. If only Rayilght developed a flip on ingest for Mac....

I actually love shooting without a flip. It's the post that blows.

I just red up on the other post you did, see time, having a macpro and working only with SD is have yet to run into that, but I can only imagine...good point. Is it the HVX 1080p footage your messing with? I wonder if the Ex or the HMC will be easier on the computer with flipped images just because of the smaller bit rates... hope so, tho I can see most of my stuff in 720p anyways...

Hmmm... interesting. I've been editing on Premiere Pro and I'm planning to go and buy myself a Mac Pro with FCP in the next few weeks.

If you shoot on the EX1, is it possible to bring in your entire (up-side-down) rushes and then instruct FCP (or cinematools) to flip the EX1 footage whilst converting all your rushes to ProRes422?

i.e. is it possible (and not too destructive to your footage) to batch convert all your rushes to be the correct way up so that when you're editing, your editing system doesn't have to flip the footage on the fly?

i think putting the Xd codec on the ex can flip in realtime, on FCP2 there is an option for flip, and it is realtime only(no rendering)so as long as you keep to real time effects you wont have to render.
I dont know what Tim is using tho...

I'm using FCP 6.02 which has been a real pain in the ass for multiclip footage. I recently updated a three camera show with it and it threw all my C camera out of sync. I'd then re-sync it on the timeline but then it would throw it out on export. It's by far the buggiest piece of (*&#* update yet.

But back on topic. I use an MBPro, 2 gig, Firmtek dual bay Esata raid 0. It's through put is as fast as your gonna get with an MBP.

However, try the batch convert option. That may work. But if it's just a filter and not newly created flipped media I got a feeling it'll choke up.

Good luck

That's exactly the workflow I'm trying to get going. I can't see how it would degrade the footage since you're just rearranging the same data and you're already transcoding from one codec to another. I tested this out with Quicktime Pro's rotate filter and using that to drive the ProRes transcode in Compressor, but it was slooooooow - 3x slower than real time, not really acceptable.

The good news is the author of JES Deinterlacer is working on adding a vertical+horizontal flip option that would enable us to 'pre-bake' the flop filter on any footage.
