philip, i saw that in your photos, you had the nikon 17-35 2.8, how did the adapter with that lens do at its widest? i have that lens and i'm searching for an adapter right now, leaning towards the RR M2, but the blade looks very nice from your footage.

I was going to get a zoom lense, but then got some sound advice to stay with prime lenses when using adapter

Nice attitude! I'd never buy a product from someone trying to promote thier product by pointing out the deficiencies of someone else's craftsmanship, particularly when the device was just released. We all know you sell an adapter. Your comments come across as petty. The fact of the matter is: no adapter---no tool ever made--is perfect.

I can give congratulations for the box, for the rails, but I cannot give congratulations for the sgblade adapter itself. The image is not perfect at this moment and it needs some tweaking. I am not here for competition. I am here because I think the customers deserves the best. Why not sit down and think: yes, there is some CA, lets work on it... instead off asking for congratulatios? This is time for improvements, not for congratulations.

I have used fast nikon zooms for the past 18 months with my adaptors. They are really classy lenses. Been said before but two of them were used in the Bourne Ultimatum on 35mm film cameras after Arri modified them.

I used the 17mm end of the 17-35mm a lot. I just had to make sure i closed down the iris of the EX1 to get good edge sharpness.

Adriano, I really wish you wouldn't judge the Blade on my one test alone. That's very foolish. I am one shooter who did ONE test. It's a high quality product, especially at this price point. I was very pleased with the results. It's not very sporting of another manufacturer to critise someone else's adaptor (and that's without going into proving whether theirs is better with images). I couldn't imagine Dennis, Hien or Brian coming onto this thread and posting the same thing that you did.

they cost around about a thousand bucks each. maybe a bit less. I got my 17-35 for $500 from ebay as the autofocus was bust!

When the rest of us recieve our Blades (this coming week for me), I'm sure you'll see plenty of footage from other cameras. I use the XH-A1 and ordered both RR1 and 2.

I don't own an EX1 but if you search the forums (including those from adapter manufacturers), you'll find that the EX1 is a challenge for every brand of adapter. Even some with optimization kits still have some issues. By the way, the XH-A1 with it's bare lens suffers from a small amount of CA as well.

There was a time when users of different cameras made what seemed like a career of finding CA in posted footage from the A1 and proudly pontificated endlessly on how their camera didn't have any CA, etc., and how bad the footage was because it had some CA.

Like anything else, the frenzy died down and now most people comment on how great the footage from the A1 looks. The CA is still there, but unless you are looking for it, you don't see it.

If your video is well shot and captivating, your audience, your paying customers, will likely not notice a small amount of CA.

Personally, I think the footage that Philip shot looks great. Who knows, with a different 35mm lens or maybe in non-flipped mode, the CA may lessen or go a way all together with the EX1/Blade combo.

Just from what Philip has posted, I think Wayne and company did a fantastic job, not only with the packaging but the adapter as well. I can't wait for my Blade to arrive.

Philip, unfortunately, at least in So. Calif, it has been raining since Friday so the light here isn't much better than it was for you. The forcast for this week doesn't look promising. Hopefully there will be a day of two when the sun is out.

I did not judge the blade, I did not criticise the blade. I just showed something I found in the image. I think I am helping the manufacturer to do improvements, like all the coments I got to my adapter in the past helped me to improve the apefos. But I think it is time to stop talking and let the images says for itselfs. It is sad to see that maybe the forums is changing from developing to advertising... Helping and developing is one of the most important reasons to the forums, not just advertising...

Very true. But this isn't about advertising it isn't helping people make an informed decision. My thread was to inform people about my first experiences of the SGBlade, I went out and bought one and did a review.

I think very few people will agree with you that this forum is about advertising. Sure by it's nature people learn about new products and will probably go out and buy them after seeing them here but DVXuser is a very opinion led place. Much more so than most others. A lot of debate goes on here which helps inform. My point is you are a manufacturer and seller of your own adaptor. I just find it weird and unsportsmanlike to criticize a competitor.

Can you imagine on my thread reviewing the EX3, Panasonic coming onto it and saying, look it only has 35mpbs and only has 4:2:0. Sure other members did that and that is their right to but not another manufacturer. That is when it feels more like advertising!

By being a manufacturer you should have your own discussions about your products and participate in more general stuff, but it just seems inappropriate to me for you to be saying what you are saying about someone else's product. That's all. I truly want to see some great footage from your adaptor. As I said in my review, competition is key in every industry and Shoot 35's SGBlade is upping the competition which is only a good thing for us all. For the Apefos adaptor, for Redrock, for Cinevate, for Cinemek, for Letus, for Movietube and of course for P&S Technik. Without the little ones snapping at the heels at the German king do you think they would have responded with improving their product as quickly as they did?

I think people should be pointing out flaws, problems etc...it's incredibly important. But this test was about as unscientific as you get, which is what I do really. I am no lab technician. I am an end user. Let's see more footage over the coming weeks and see if there is CA in that, I will be testing more next weekend with Razor2 and probably just my prime lenses. I will also be using my EX3 too, not that I can imagine that will be any different to the EX1. I am doing this to inform others.

This week I will also get to test the Letus relays with the Ultimate on some B4 cameras and the EX3. All exciting stuff and a new chapter in the 35mm adaptor market. One that until now was exclusive to the Pro 35. Now Letus are competing and Cinevate aren't far behind! There is also Evangelos who is making his own B4 for the Brevis.

Don't get me wrong Adriano. I applaud what you are doing by making your adaptor, without people like you we wouldn't all be reaping the benefits of this booming market.

Anyway let's drop it and move onto other stuff.

All the best,

Phil

Just to get this thread back on subject,

If you look at the blade-ex1 footage on vimeo theres some steadicam stuff from the seafront with a 20mm fd prime on an overcast day
....no CA ... on an ex1
Is this due to different lighting cloudy vs winter low sun?

Hmm... The CA might come from the 35mm lens wide open, too. Maybe we shouldn't blame Blade...

With all respect to Philip, there seems to be a double standard going on here. What if I had made the CA statement? I don't sell any adapter so does that make my comment more valid? Apefos wasn't saying "The Blade had CA, mine adapter doesn't." He simply made an observation. I see a lot of users posting footage from their homemade adapters and getting feedback from the community as well as people like Wayne or Dennis. Should Shoot35 and Cinevate not participate in those threads because they're selling adapters too?

I personally hate the whole process where someone posts something and everyone pours over it with a microscope trying to find every little fault. It gets old quick but we shouldn't get defensive about it.

I really want the thread to get back on track if possible. I stand by my thoughts. It just feels inappropriate. I for one have bought an adaptor from Adriano so he is a business, but let's move on...

I think the CA was most likely caused by the wide open zooms but I will be doing more tests this weekend.

am certain it was from me being wide open, but i often shoot like that and to be honest the CA doesn't bother me at all...i didn't notice it until it was pointed out...

if there are any blade uk owners out there who want to get together and do some tests with various combinations let me know...
