Hi Guys,

We have been working closely with Evangelos Achillopoulos over at Motionfx.gr for the last few months, tweaking his 2/3 B4 GG.relay lens with our SGblade 35mm adapter.

I received the final prototype B4 relay about 2 weekend ago and took her for a test spin with an HPX2700. Evangelos sent me both the FF35 (full frame) & S35 (academy frame) versions to test. We are very pleased with the results!

Evangelos has also sent the FF35 to Chris Albert who is a customer of ours. He is Australian working on Tel Aviv for CBS.

Evangelos will post some stills from both of our tests, in the meantime, here is the rig with HPX2700

Hello to all,

After a long time of developing the GG.relay is finally out.

Wayne as you see above has already test it and I'm happy to announce the availability of the relay.

Shoot35 will be a distributor of the relay and there are going to be interesting offers with bundles as well.

Below are stills from Chris that has being shoot in Tel Aviv...

In few days I will also post footage from Chris...

Note that the above photos of Wayne are with the FF35 relay. The S35 setup is shorter by 4.5cm...

My new web site will be up in a couple of weeks...

Really good Evangelios and Wayne!...

I´m glad that all your work is finally working out!!!...

Congratulations!...

The relay is modular, that means it can be converted to all frame sizes and can change mounts. So you buy the basic either S35 or FF35 for 2/3 b4 mount and by buying a conversion kit you can make the relay do the other frame size. Or you can buy a new mount kit to convert the relay to fit a 1/3 camera like EX1 or JVC251... moreover in the future we will introduce a Scarlet mount to attach the SGblade to the new RED camera in case you have the 2/3 version.

In the photos with Wayne the relay is on FF35 setup, on S35 setup is shorter by 4.5cm.

The prices are:

GG.relay Rev.3 for Blade flip S35 1750 euro's
GG.relay Rev.3 for Blade flip FF35 1900 euro's
2/3 conversion kit for S35 to FF35 800 euro's
2/3 conversion kit for FF35 to S36 650 euro's
GG.relay Rev.3 Bundle of S35 & FF35 2400 euro's

Our aim was to have an SGblade/GG.relay solution for 2/3 cameras in less than 3000 euro's price tag to be affordable and due to modularity future proof.

As for the 1/2 or 1/3 version I will build it upon demand. I must gather at least 6-8 orders to justify the development.
The price will be for the S35 version 1850 euro's. I will build a pre order form in the new web site with a refundable down payment for the pre orders.
the conversion kit for any 2/3 GG.relay Rev.3 to 1/2 will be at 800 euro's

You can order the relay from Wayne web site in a couple of weeks or from us.

Shoot35 is an official distributor of GG.relay and will have better delivery times due to stock. Support is covered by us directly.

For more info, in two weeks, it will be up the new web site of Motion FX www.motionfx.gr.

For preorders please email at info@shoot35.co.uk or Lakis@motionfx.gr until the new web pages are up.

what if relay is wide open?

can you explain the pricing?

GG.relay is a modular relay lens.

relay-braek-down.jpg

It is consist of the main lens block that has the aperture control and the focus helix, the camera mounts that can be exchanged by user with just three Allen screws, an extension tube with various sizes depending on the configuration and an adapter connection part that is special for every adepter that is going to be used.

So every user can configure his relay according to his needs and just by changing the lower cost parts than a whole lens every time for FF35 or S35 or 1/2 or Scarlet. Also modularity makes the relay future proof.

For every adapter there is a different configuration set. Currently there is an SGblade compatible set that gives the options of S35 frame size and FF35 frame size. The available mounts are at the moment only for 2/3 B4.

In the future there will be available a 1/2 mount set and a scarlet 2/3 as needs evolving... Additionally a Redrock Micro set and a Letus LEX will also be available in case that there is demand.

can you explain the pricing?

The SGblade set for S35 includes the main lens block (MLB), the S35 2/3 b4 mount (SS2/3M) and the SGblade flip connection part (SGF).

The SGblade set for FF35 includes the MLB, the FF35 2/3 B4 mount (FFS2/3M), the FF35 focus tube (FFS2/3T) and the SGF.

The SGblade bundle for S35 and FF35 includes all the above (with just one MLB and SGF).

The rest is the missing parts to convert your relay to the other setup.

what if relay is wide open?

The relay has an aperture of F2.8 at the widest. The sweet spot is F4, in low light conditions is good down to F2.8 1/2. It can go down to F2.8 in some cases as well.

The SGblade-RR1/GG.relay in comparison to Letus Compact/Ultimate at S35 is half stop faster taking account that the Letus compact can't be used wide open but instead at 2.8 1/2 to a comparable level of the GG.relay MTF performance. Against Letus Pro/Ultimate is half slower.

The GG.relay on Viper at F4 resolved 1450 lines of resolution... That is comparable to RED. Can the compact reach that number? and in what aperture? My charts are in this forum published. http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=174960

The same applies on FF35 configuration but I can only assume what would be since Letus doesn't offer an FF35 relay.

Have always in mind that the starting aperture is NOT an indication of the performance in sharpness/MTF and to be compared two relays have to take in account the sharpness performance VS aperture... and NOT just starting aperture since this can be totally misleading.

Also the adapter performance is another factor. SGblade is an adapter that can change GG's and have different properties for every use... In example a PRO/Ultimate combo that we have on hand in Athens, with the ARRIs old 2.1 PL lens set is unusable below 35mm due to heavy vignette. In contrast the RR2 on blade works all the way to 18mm with no noticeable vignette.

The footage looks soft on the edges. Is that just the wide angle lens used or is it something else?

Have you ever seen footage on 2/3 camera from an adapter in FF35 from a 14mm 2.8 FD or a 15mm fish eye lens?

The 36mm of the frame reaches the edge of the GG by few tenths of a mm...

Yes it is the front lens... they don't even have planar focus field... also there are CA problems in these lenses... but to be able to use such a lens in an adapter in FF35 is totally unique...!

These shoots are the first shoots that Chris took. His relay needs a fix which is on the way. After that the results would be even better...

If you look at the 24/85/100/135mm shots they're very good edge to edge. The 14mm and 15mm fisheye Canon FD lenses are pretty extreme...the lenses themselves are soft at the edges and 30 years old!

The Canon FD 85mm 1.2L is a suburb lens for example...if you put on a lesser lens then you get different results. ie look at the 35mm...it vignettes and is far softer. I am not that experienced in the 35mm adapter realm, but it's become very obvious to me that it's a combination of the ground glass and the specific lens you have on. This is then effected finally by the relay's characteristics.

The Rotorazor 3 is very light efficient, but vignettes like crazy on many lenses....the RR2 hardly vignettes at all.

If you want super edge to edge sharpness then go the S35 frame, then you will be just using the sharpest part of the lenses...but you loose that super wide ability....

I will be getting the S35 part of the relay as soon as they stop the strikes in Greece!

Cheers, Chris

I look forward to seeing the results with the updated relay.

I was totally sold on the idea of this relay until I saw the first few seconds of footage. I stopped the player and closed the page down on the strength of those first few seconds.

The relay is showing the quality on the rest of the footage... so please tolerate the first seconds and then see the rest and you will understand... the difference is huge on edge sharpness on the 14mm compared to 15mm...

So please close your eyes or jump that part and see the rest... its 36mm x 24mm sharp all around...

The fix its something that will fix things just 15%... but its already great...
