What is an SFK file. They show up in my documents with the name that i gave my video clips. Its messed up, half of my captured clips are viewable outside of vegas but the other half are these SFK files and when i try to open them outside of vegas it says windows can not open them. when im in vegas, all of my clips show up in the media pool, even the SFK files, but the half that are sfk files i cant find in the explorer. When i capter, i direct all the footage to a raw footage folder, but in that raw footage foler only half are visable, the other half are these SFK files and don't even show a picture of the clip. Ive totaly confused myself, can someone help me out? I just got a new laptop and I don't remember it doing this on my desktop.

Those are the files used to show the audio waveforms in the timeline. They're just created to make the loading faster...the second time you open something.

You can delete them...or not...Vegas will recreate them as needed.

I leave them until I'm done, then clean them off the harddrive.

Ok. sounds good. But half the captured clips i can only find in that format. For example, i named a clip "skit 1" and when i did a search, all i found was the SFK file format. Here is another example, when i first open a project file and then go right into the media pool and scrool down, before it has time to generate a thumbnail pic of the clip it has a little thumbnail pic of the programe it can open with. As i scrole down the media pool, half are Windows media player and the other half are these SFK files, its an icon of a page with the right corner bent.

The SFK file is just a graphic file, Sonic Foundry graphiK file. When you delete a video clip or audio clip, the SFK remains behind. They don't hurt anything, but should be deleted after you've accumulated a lot of them simply for housekeeping purposes.
Somewhere, you've deleted the Skit1 file, but left the graphic behind.

Ok, im still a bit stumped. I understand SFK file will remain after deleting somthing and i have deleted some clips. But there are SFK files and only SFK files for clips i never deleted. For the most part the SFK files are like 50KB but alot are like 350MB and when i right click and open it asks me which programe i want to run it in and i choose vegas and it opens up the video in vegas. These clips which i never deleted are only showing up as SFK files and are viewable only in vegas. Thanks for taking the time to help me out. Im so dang confused, i almost want to recapture all my stuff onto an external drive. Im a very organized file type person and Ive used vegas sense 4.0 and ive never run across this thing before.

Opening the SFK brings the actual clip into Vegas?

That sounds like the clip is still on the hard drive. But maybe not where you expect it to be, if you can't see the file itself sitting there.

Do a search of all drives for a filename you know.

"Ive used vegas sense 4.0 and ive never run across this thing before."

Well....maybe you haven't noticed, but SFK files pre-date Vegas by about 9 years, as part of sound forge and ACID.
A 350 meg sfk file sounds like something got renamed. If you really wanna be organized, do a wild card search for *.sfk, and delete them all.
Next time you open any old project in Vegas, it will re-draw all required/related .sfk files.

Thanks for all the help. I've seen the SFK files manny times before, i just didn't know what they were. "Ive used Vegas sense 4.0 and ive never run across this thing before." I was refering to my situation of not being able to view them anywhere other than Vegas. And Spot you are right, i did change the name of the clips in question. Im going to try your sugestion. Thanks

Does anyone have a system so that these files are hidden, that is to say, they don't visibly show up in Explorer or elsewhere? I just find them burdensome.
