This question is so newbie. I have one mic plugged into both input 1 and 2 and need to know what my camera should be set on for Channel 1 / 2 select and Input 1 / 2 select for both Battery and Phantom. Thanks!!
If you want a mono signal, there is no need to connect the mic to both inputs (in fact this isn't a reall good idea). Rather, connect it to "INPUT 2" only and then set the camera to "CH 1 SELECT" = "INPUT 2" and "CH 2 SELECT" to "INPUT 2". As for the phantom power, use it only if you mic requires it; if your mic has an internal battery set "INPUT 2" "MIC Power +48V" to "OFF". This is all assuming that you are connecting directly to the mic and not using an external preamplifier (field mixer), if this is the case then set the camera's "INPUT 2" switch to the "MIC" position. Depending upon the mic and the levels of the sounds that you are attempting to record, you may also need to consider changing the camera's "MIC GAIN2", there are two options for the DVX, either "-50dB" or the more sensitive "-60dB".
Most of the time, the audio that you record with your shoot (sync sound), is dialog and hence mono (though there are times when you might want to use the second channel of the camera for a wireless lav or something else). Your project (film) can be stereo or surround, but that is something that you would more likely do in post. Dialog should be pretty much straight up the middle (or assigned to the dialog/center channel in a surround project). There are times when an off camera character might have their dialog coming from an extream location, but not too often as it can be a distraction.
Stereo is best for things like the score and some folly sounds.
