Setting up NAS for client raw video delivery?

Hey all,

I'm hoping someone has experience with this. I'm constantly needing to deliver raw footage from my shoots to my clients and i would really love to be able to just have them download the files from my nas directly and not have to upload the files or mail them discs or hard drives.

What are you guys using to do this, or do know how i can do this.

My budget for a reliable nas is around $250-450 (not including drives)

P.s. does anyone know if there is a way to share only specific folders with them?

Thanks!

Do you mean that you want your clients to have ftp access to your NAS over the internet? I'm sure that's possible, but given the state of internet security at the moment, I don't think that's advisable.

You might want to set up a dedicated ftp server and NAS for only this material, and nothing else. Then you could allow direct ftp access to this NAS over the internet. The details will vary depending on your ISP, your office network and your NAS.

I think I may have figured out how to do it with a Synology NAS. Hoping it works as it sounds. I'll know next week when I get it up and running.

I've tried to do that before, but my home Internet speed (and I have the fastest tier available to me) was at the level where it would take 3 days for them to get it. And it was just a sit-down interview shot on DSLR.

I ended up putting the footage on a hard drive and shipping it to them (it was around 40GB all in, including .WAV files from the audio recorder). Upload speed is the big culprit and while there's some really fast home connections for downloading, it seems that upload is hobbled for pretty much anything but business-class Internet access. If I could upload 40GB in time it would take to download on the connection I currently have, there wouldn't be a problem (would take a few hours instead of 36).
