Setting up for 24p editing

This topic has come up so much that I am sort of embarrassed to ask the question. But I just got finished shooting 1 hour and 30 minutes worth of footage in 24PA mode. What is the process for setting up FCP to remove the pulldown and all that stuff.

Thanks

Re: Setting up for 24p editing

Assuming you're in FCP 4.5 (aka HD) it's cake. When you specify your capture settings in the preferences, there's a pre-set called "NTSC 24 fps with Advanced Pulldown Removal" or something really similar. Just select that and (if necessary) tweak the Anamorphic and/or Audio settings as needed and Voilá... pulldown removed.

Re: Setting up for 24p editing

Make sure you open a timeline that is 24p DV. If you clone the footage in 24pa (pull down removed) and then edit in 60i or 30p, or some other standard, you will know because all the footage will require a render (red bar over footage in the timeline). If you bring in the 24pa with pull down removed, it will not require a render.

By the way, there are no stupid questions. I hate netters who laugh at people asking questions. I have been at this for 18 years and am nowhere near the perfect bastion of all knowledge in the world and universe. There is so much to know, especially when one moves into the land of one-man-bands (writing, shooting, and editing your own stuff) that we all need to have a source for "stupid questions."

Its free, and there is no change of interface.

Re: Setting up for 24p editing

Once you capture it with the advanced pulldown, just be absolute sure that the timeline settings match your capture settings or else you will be rendering until the cows come home. I just recently did my first project in 24pa, and was a little nervious after hearing some of the stories on this site, but once I matched the settings I didn't have any problems...

Re: Setting up for 24p editing

ok cool but at which point do you actually remove the pulldown B4 the capture or after and if I have to, when do I add it back or do I have to add the pulldown back? My export will be DVD.

This is the most common mistake of my students. Import a 24p, then edit at 60i, then come running telling me what a peice of crap their dual processor G5 with 4gb of RAM is because it "makes them render all the time."

However this is something you may want to consider. IF you are going to DVD as the final product and not to film, it may not be useful to shoot in 24pa in the first place because you will be moving from the 24pa DV codec to the 60i MPEG2 codec and some of the "film look" will be lost in the transition. At that point, it may be better to shoot in 60i and simply add a film filter in the editing process, then there are no worries about the pull-down.

Re: Setting up for 24p editing

Hmmmm....well I got a tape and a 1/2 of 24PA footage so its going to have to get edited. Thats what I meant about adding the pulldown back after your done editing to retain the film look. I thought I read that in the manual somewhere.

Re: Setting up for 24p editing

DVX100Shooter,

You won't have any problem editing and have the film look with Final Cut Pro 4.5. I've done it many many times without any problem.
You will have 100% of the captured resolution, real 24 fps (23.98), and if your computer is fast enough, you'll see it real time on your NTSC monitor ( as you'd see from a 24p film broadcasted by normal 60i TV stations).

Here is the easy way to do it:

1) capture your DV footage DV NTSC normal on your capture scratch disk.
2) click in the "tool" menu and choose "remove advanced pulldown" for each clip. (you can also choose it in the capture menu" if you have many capture clips.
3) create a timeline choosing 23.98 editing timebase in the "settings" menu (anamorphic or 4:3)
4) in the "edit" menu, click "item properties" and see if your clip is considered as anamorphic, if it was shot in anamorphic (lense or electronic squeeze), then check "anamorphic"

then your clip(s) is ready to be edited and seen in realtime in your sequence, and on your NTSC monitor.

And you can print it to tape, it will add the standard 2:3 pulldown automatically.

or,,,

print a real 24p DVD that will be 100% compliant with any 60i or progressive TV set.

have fun !

Re: Setting up for 24p editing

Hey Antoine or anyone that can answer this question. You mentioned that I would have to select "remove advanced pulldown" for each clip. Is there a way to do this in a Batch set up so I wont have to do it for each clip? I have 9 pages of logged shots that I need to import and I want to make this as less a hassle as possible! :)

Re: Setting up for 24p editing

dvx,

just highlight all the clips in the bin and that'll do it. i did this w/ tons of quickstream dv footage(since i didn't use fcp 4's capture because i used footage directly from the drive).

Re: Setting up for 24p editing

are you saying that if I shoot in 24PA that I do not need to select the "advanced pulldown removal" setting when I capture?

I don't know if anyone saw my previous post in the "technical" forum, but my raw footage i am capturing into FCP HD looks terrible. I have all the settings right I belive, but it doesn't compare to the captures I took with Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 on the PC. Can anyone help me out? I have no idea why they are coming out so bad, all the settings are correct as far as I can tell. Here is some raw footage that I captured directly into FCP and uploaded to the web, I didn't even pull it into the timeline, I just snagged it out of the "Capture scratch" folder...
